Pophole survey- do your chickens go through a "hole in the wall"?

I have a hole in the wall and am planning on building a short tunnel with a 90 degree corner this summer to hopefully keep the winter winds out.

I would strongly suggest NOT doing that.

Advantages: none, because it is so easy to make a little 'porch roof' over a normal side-wall pophole.

Disadvantages: you lose a lot of valuable floorspace (remember the hole has to be several times the size of a wall pophole), you will perpetually be losing bedding down the hole no matter how you try to put up sills to prevent it, and the bedding that goes down the hole will gradually decompose and make your run chronically-damp and stinky.

The only time when it *does* make sense to have the pophole in the floor is when you are so incredibly limited in space (e.g. on an apartment balcony) that you need to use the full footprint for both coop on top and run on bottom, and thus there is no possibility of letting them out the side of the coop part.

Any other situation, save yourself a LOT of aggravation and just put a little porch roof over the popdoor if you are worried about rain coming in.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

We have one on our wall with a roof over it, never had a prob. with the rain coming in.
