Do you have any hardware cloth that you could make a smaller area inside the kiddie pool? Then take it out after you feel comfortable giving them the whole pool to use.

Just what I was going to suggest....even another piece of cardboard to corral them closer to heat at first.

I was gonna say cardboard, but using a heat lamp, I said wire.
