I have a barred rock. The girls are black with white stripes and the boys are white with black stripes... that's how I explain it to them. Good luck!
Technically it isn't true, but it may look like that to some people. Barring is actually white bars. In this case, it is on a black bird, but it can also be on a dominant white bird, creating ghost barring.
 
She is laying! It’s a very weird looking egg though is this normal for a Barred Rock?
