Hi,

i have a young hen that I think has broken one of her legs, I have no idea how she may have done it.
She doesnt appear to be in pain, except when she tries to get up and move about. I have her caged and am watching her, but wonder if anyone has ever had a hen recover and live a good life after having a broken leg? I don't want to put her down, but if she doesn't start to move about, think that is what would need to be done?

thanks

This is just from my experience from last summer. Our 1 1/2 yr, old BO rooster made the mistake of flogging my DH (not 'darling' at the time, mind you:/)on a bad day. My DH threw a broom handle at him and broke is leg. I'm sure because it was twisted badly and he could not put weight on it. I kept him in a confined hutch for at least 2-3 weeks until I had a hawk attack. I had to let him back out to protect the ladies. I did nothing for him. Now, his leg is still twisted. He gets around fine but with a limp.
I hope you have just as good luck as I did.

I am in my third week of a broken legged hen. We did use popcicle sticks and put at the break. Just be sure and not have too tight. We did, and now have foot problems. Her break is finally healing, but it didn't for a couple of weeks. I think in about 2 more she should be good as new. Unfortunately we are now working with a foot that looks swollen and ucky. We did put her on Pen G for 5 days just in case her foot had become infected. She eats and drinks like a pro, but I'm sure she is bored. Others have much more experience than I do so I'm sure they will chime in.

Good Luck.

Look very closely at the bottom of her feet. I thought one of mine had injured a leg, and it was really bumble foot. Look for a small black area. Good luck!

What exactly is bumble foot? this morning my hen had both feet curled up and was trying to walk on her knees. she did not favor either leg, and it was if her feet were not working. i had thought that she had a broken leg, but don't think this is the case now. she is still eating and drinking and laid an egg OK.

Do a search for bumble foot by Ruth. She took wonderful pics, that explain everything, including the surgery if necessary. Not sure why your hen wouldn't be using both legs-hoping for the best. Good luck!

Bumble foot happens to a lot of creatures actually. Sometimes it's when the foot is sore and bacteria such as urine or feces makes it way into rub wounds or blisters.
Fairly easy to treat and all the animal need is some TLC plus some washing. Looking at the feet you should see the sores clearly if it is Bumble foot.

I've had a few rescues of all sorts come in with it (some hamsters too!), normally it takes a week to start looking better if you wrap it with liquid resistant materials, clean and apply an antibiotic.

i didn't see any swelling or problems with the tops of her feet this morning - only that her toes were all curled up. I will take a look at the soles of her feet tonight to see if it may be bumblefoot.
