So I have a hen, golden laced Wyandotte, looks like she has bumblefoot. There are 3 scabs on the bottom of her foot, but no redness. She is limping. So would I still need to lance it? Or would soaking it in Epsom salt suffice? I've never dealt with this before. I did find a step by step how to remove the kernel from the abcess, it's rather detailed. I really don't want to open up her foot if I don't have to. It's not hot to the touch either. Please let me know what I should do. I'd hate to put her thru unnecessary surgery if I don't have to.

Can you post pictures of the foot?
If it's not real bad then soaking and treating topically might be enough.
If she's limping and it's bigger then I would remove the lesion, clean it out underneath that well, and wrap the foot. Often if you soak it and get it soft you can pull up the edges of the lesion with tweezers and slowly pull it off. It's not always necessary to lance or cut the foot. I did a fairly nasty one today, removed the lesion, squeezed out the core (which was substantial) flushed it all out well and bandaged. No cutting at all. Sometimes if the lesion is shallow, there isn't a core, just the raw tissue underneath. Every foot is a bit different.
