One of my hens, Pippy (barred rock hen), has been standing on one foot recently, so I decided yesterday to soak her foot in epsom salts. After it was clean, I was in a hurry and couldn’t get a picture of her foot, so I just put Neosporin on it, Today, I inspected it again and it looked a little pinkish and had a brown dot toward the center. I’m fairly certain this is not dirt, when I tried gently scraping it off it wouldnt come off. Is this bumblefoot? If it is, how would I treat it?

That looks like a little bumble. Soak in Epsom salts for 10-15 minutes, then after the soak try to pull the scab/plug out (the blackish scab thing) and then pack the hole with neosporin without pain relief and wrap the foot in vetwrap. If you could not get the scab off, just apply neosporin on top of the scab and wrap and soak again the next day and try again. Keep the bird in a dry clean area. Continue treatment once-twice a day until healed. Feel free to ask more questions questions. Good luck, it doesn’t look terrible. 😁

Thank you so much!

Do you have any suggestions on how I’d be able to pull the plug out without my hen going crazy/being in too much pain?

Usually I will hold the bird under my arm like a football, or have another person help, and you can wrap the bird snug in a towel but not too tight so they can’t breathe, and then I usually use my fingernail to try to get the bumble out. If you can get your nail under the edge and then gently try to pull it off/out. Be sure to wash your hands thouroughly as bumblefoot is a staph infection. You can always wear rubber gloves, but I prefer barehands since I feel like I can function better.

Here are some pics of the hen I treated. I often use medical tape as an extra way to keep the wrap on there. The first picture is before removal, second is after soaking and pulling the plug/scab off, third is the plugs(from two different feet) and fourth is the wrap

Sorry to keep bothering, but I looked at her other foot and noticed a larger spot that looks similar. Assuming it’s bumblefoot aswell, would I be able to treat both feet at the same time or should I wait a few days in between?
