This morning I startled my sweet, sweet Buff Orpington hen "Pumpkin" and she freaked out and injured herself, I think by running into the run wall? Anyway, the blood.... oh my goodness I was covered, she was covered, the run was covered, one of the other girls was covered (the head shake/spatter).... SO.... add me crying like a baby and you've got one ugly scene! I couldn't tell right away what exactly was bleeding... there was a steady drip of blood from the end of her top beak. Also very light bleeding from the bridge of her "nose" where the comb and the beak meet. I've shut her in the coop (with water and softened food) because one of her sisters kept picking at her beak. She won't eat. She tried twice and quickly stopped I assume due to discomfort. I've put Neosporin with pain killer on it. I wanted to try and wash the dried blood off her beak but I don't want to hurt her AND it looks like it could start bleeding again easily so I don't want to wind her up. I'm wondering... why the blood??? I keep reading where chickens beaks get trimmed on purpose... do they bleed? Is there a "quick" like in a fingernail? She appears to have a horizontal crack, top beak, less than 1/4" from the tip.
What should I expect? Might it fall off? Do they really grow back? Is there anything I need to be doing? I feel so bad.

I don't know a lot about this injury so I will defer to experts, but I know there is a powdered "blood stopper" you can get that can help with heavy bleeding like that in a pinch. Also, I've read some people on here say not to use neosporin that contains novocaine or lidocaine. Not sure why but you might want to check on that before you use more.

I'm sure your girl will be okay - there are a lot of knowledgeable people here who I'm sure can help. Best wishes!

Thanks, I did check the Neosporin for any type of "caine" pain reliever. I just want to cuddle up in the coop with her but there isnt room for me. Next on the list: build bigger coop for ME. LOL!

I have had a hen who 2 times has bled from the top of beak/nasal area, both times it was because she got scared and flipped similar to what you are descibing. I dont think it was extensive and injury as yours but she seemed to recovered fine, just had dried blood on her for a few days, luckily the others didnt notice.

Good luck with your girl.

Well, this happened Saturday. She didn't eat or drink the rest of the day Saturday and as far as I know all day Sunday. Sunday evening I used a dropper and mixed up some water and chick saver and got as much of that into her as I could. Which wasnt much. She is only slightly interested in food, but only sort of pretends to eat. Not ever taking a bite. I did see her dip her beak into the water tonite... and I tried to make her eat some yogurt and applesauce... again she wouldn't take much at all. I'm sure she's sore. I'm just sick over it. Poor poor baby! She just wants to be close to me. :( I hope that as the days go on she starts to be less sore and starts eating!! I'm so worried about her! AND before this happened I thought she was starting a molt.....well, since the accident her feathers are falling out like crazy!... Good grief!

I am SO RELIEVED!! I've been trying to entice Pumpkin to eat by bringing out plain yogurt and applesauce with freeze dried worms.... chicken feed moistened with applesauce... Finally tonite, she ate a few bites on her own. I had to put the dominant hen into the coop so she wouldnt get run off. I also saw her poo a solid one! I still am wondering if that top beak will grow back??? Anyone know?
