Hi everyone, I have a hen that will go to the nesting box a lot and only drinks and eats a little, so i thought it was egg-bound, but then i looked at the symptoms and it said swollen vent and my hen dosen't have that. Is she egg- bound? And if so what should i do?

Pick her up and feel around her vent. If you are really concerned you can put on a tight surgical rubber glove with some KY jelly on it and reach up inside of her and see if you can feel the egg. If you can, you can push on one side of the egg to get it into the right position.

If she continues to go into the nest box, not lay and eat less and less, she is probably egg bound. You can also try to sit her butt into a warm bath and massage the area, sometimes the warmth of the water will cause the muscles to push the stubborn egg out. Good luck.

Hmmm... if you try to remove her from the nest box does she get reallllly mad at you? You are describing a broody behaviour.

When a hen goes broody, they spend all their day flattened out over eggs (if available) and hissing at you when you come by and disturb them. They may only get off the nest once a day to eat and drink. Is it possible you have a broody hen or one that is thinking about going broody on you?

oh ok thanks everyone but she just laid a hhhuuuugggee egg, i guess it was stuck inside her vent
