Today, I came home from my school to find out that not only had the food and water been moved from its normal spot, but two of my four chickens were gone!

My poor babies, Nancy and Stewie (both girls) are gone!!! And I found feathers on our porch that most likely belong to Stewie (poor thing), but Nancy might be hiding.

My bantams, Sony and Heidi, aren't harmed, but they are acting scared (they are usually brave, energetic, and friendly). We have raccoons, but it isn't nighttime yet, and I haven't seen hawks around here (neighbor keeps chickens too, and they haven't seen any either). We don't have a gate or fence, though, so I was wondering if it was a two-legged predator, or maybe a dog (Stewie's sister was killed by a dog months earlier).

What happened??? I live in Berkeley, CA, where thing like this normally don't happen!

Anyone have any ideas, or tips on finding Nancy?

It's hard to know what might have happened. Although, it's quite possible that something scared them and the missing ones are just hiding somewhere. Don't give up hope on Stewie yet.

I live on a farm in Texas & I'd be scared to let my chickens out if I wasn't there with them. To be honest I still worry about them when I'm there. They roam all over & I can't keep my eye on all of them.

raccoons do not really care if it is day or night when human activity is at a minimum is when they feed / strike they are just as apt to feed in the daytime as they are to feed at night. the food being moved sound like coon
