Hey guys!

I bought a few rabbits from the auction last tuesday. They seem to be young, and some are younger than others. I'm guessing they are about 10 weeks old, but I could be wrong. I will eventually be selling them at the 4-H fair. Most all of them look to be in great health, but there is one that I've noticed is a bit bloated in the stomach, but I can still feel the back bones. She is not terribly skinny, but I feel like I should not feel any bones for the size of her stomach. I've also noticed she has had some diarrhea. I'm thinking she probably has a case of worms.

I've had rabbits before, but have never had to treat them for worms. I've been doing research, but most of the info I can find says to treat rabbits ages 12 weeks and older with ivermectin. I'm not sure about the age of these guys, so I don't want to hurt her. I've actually grown pretty attached to this one rabbit and I will probably keep her, but I definitely don't want to sell any rabbits with worm problems.

What do you guys use to worm your rabbits? I've read mixed reviews about using horse wormer, but many seem to have good luck. Again, I'm not sure if it will be ok for her since she may be a bit younger than the recommended age for wormer, and she is also fairly small (Looks like holland lop/jersey wooley mix). I will be going to TS tomorrow to see what other wormers they offer.

None of the other rabbits seem to be exhibiting signs of worms other than this little girl. I gave them all a real good check over today. Other than the pudgy belly, this rabbit seems healthy. The fair is still about three weeks away, so I should have time to treat any others if problems arise, but I would definitely like your advice so I don't do more harm than good for these guys.

Another possibility is just a reaction to the new food. I have no idea what they were getting in their previous home so I started them on (I think) Purina rabbit pellets and lots of timothy hay. I actually just noticed the diarrhea today and she didn't have it when I bought her. I can't remember for sure whether she was bloated when I bought her, but I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if she was like this when I gave them a good look over before and after purchasing them.

Edit: One more thing to add. She eats like a pig, which doesn't seem to fit with many other diseases I am seeing. I know a fecal is the best way to find out what she has, but I will have to call around and see where I can get one done without making an appointment. I didn't see any worms in her poop and if she was recently separated from mom, change of food seems to be (and I'm hoping) the most likely. Though I'd like to know if worming her will hurt anything.

Diarrhea and a bloated belly in a young rabbit put me more in mind of coccidia than worms. Worms are seldom a problem in rabbits kept in wire cages (of course, you have no way of knowing how these rabbits were housed before you got them).

Yeah, I read about that too. I'm hoping it's not that, but I will look into picking up some Corrid. All the years I've had animals, I've never had an issue with that. It seems the symptoms have come up rather quickly and she still has quite an appetite, which does not go along with the symptoms of Coccidia. Either way, if I treat all the bunnies with a round of corrid, I should have enough time for the full treatment.

Sorry I keep adding posts, but I decided to definitely treat for the Coccidia. Even if it is not that, I would feel MUCH better about having treated them for that before the fair. I'm glad I still have enough days. I'm also going to give the two hutches a good scrub down. I've heard it takes a week or so to start seeing the bunnies feeling better so if she looks better, then I know I chose the right treatment. Her diarrhea is not terrible, and they all drink PLENTY of water (I refill a large bowl twice a day), so I'm not all that worried about dehydration yet.

Thanks for the input! Let me know if you have any other suggestions for me.

Quick update, even though it seems not too many are following this post!

Got up this morning and checked on everybody before heading to tractor supply. Bunny I had been worried about looked like a different bunny this morning. She was hopping around like a crazy thing, bloating has gone down pretty significantly, and absolutely no diarrhea. All poop from all rabbits looked normal. I decided to hold off on the medication for a few days to monitor her a bit more. Also, she previously had one ear flopped down and the other was sticking up. Today, both ears were sticking straight in the air. Not sure what the heck was going on with her, but I'm glad to see she seems to be feeling much better. Checked on all of them again just a few minutes ago and they've been drinking plenty of water and eating plenty. They've been going through hay like crazy as well.
