Hi all,

I noticed lately that I have no duck eggs, and now less chicken eggs. Now I am finding chicken eggs high in a small coop where the chickens used to lay. They are dirty as if they had been on the ground. I didn't collect them, the next day when I went out, one of the eggs was smashed, it almost looked like a snake hole tooth mark. Yesterday when I was out there, 3 of the eggs were on higher shelf, again I did not collect them, so tonight I found another one all smashed. It is a shelf that the chickens could not possible lay on. I think a raccoon is coming during the day while my dog is asleep. Is it possible the raccoon is moving the eggs where it can get them later? and then smashin g them and eating them.

I have seen some wire pulled away on the coop that I need to fix.

If it were a coon, it wouldn't stop at eggs and you'd have dead chickens... Probably headless. Squirrels will steal and eat eggs... I know, hard to believe but it has been reported here before. I would suggest securing the coop/run to prevent anything from getting in. Good luck!

Yeah raccoons will sometimes just eat eggs. Years ago I’ve had raccoons dig under a pen and just take eggs. The hole this raccoon was getting in wasn’t even big enough for my hand to fit through.
You would find egg shells though. All the yolk would usually be eaten.
Sooner or later they’ll kill the chickens if it is a raccoon. Probably best to trap him and fix your coop.
