i have a question about a possible sex link...here goes.

the hen is white, the roo is a BR.....i incubated the eggs myself, and i ended up with black br looking chicks, and pale yellow chicks with black spots all over their backs. is is possible that the blacks br looking chicks will be hens, and the yellow chicks roos? just curious i don't know much about genetics and such.

any input would be great, thanks

No No possible sexlinks with that cross. Are the hens the same breed. From what you decribed, the Barred chicks are what should should get from a Barred Roo on Recessive White hens ( like a White Rock) and the White chicks with black spots are what you would get from a Barred ( or really any color roo) on Dominant White hens ( like White leghorns)

ok, bummer. i don't think that the hens are the same breed, they aren't my chickens so, i guess i don't know. i almost got all excited for a minute. is there a way to learn about genetics, any good websites or books to read. i am such a chicken geek, and that is one thing i haven't learned about yet...

So true, I would say I know a good bit of genetics and most of everything I know, I have learned right here on good ole BYC.

Do you have any specific questions in mind ?

See they sticky note at the top of the Breeds, Genetics, & Showing list.
According to that you should have sex links. The blackish-brown colored ones should be pullets while the yellow ones should be cockerals. Then again depending on what breed the white hens were could make a difference. I've read that White Leghorns will not always be dominant white that they could be masking barred or black under the white. If sex link is what you're hoping for then I wish you all the best that these are what they are (Sex linked).

is there more than one white hen?

The yellow chicks with black spots are usually the offspring of a dominent white parent (like white Leghorn). I hatched out a dozen of them myself but their daddy is a RIR. I was told that they should lay lots of light brown eggs so I assume that would also apply to a BR cross as well.

That cross, will only works with a White Rocks Rooster over a Barred Hen
The OP has a Barred Rooster over a White Hen, Just the opposite...
