Possible stroke?

I will not pull my chickens neck no matter what. I live in the uk, right now it is 7.30 pm, the vets here would laugh at me if i took a chicken, when i take my chickens to the vets i have to tell them what i think is the matter as there is no bird specialists about. It is nature for animals to die this way or it would not happen! People die when they have to and we cannot 'put people to sleep'. It is the way life goes, I have made the chicken as comfortable as i can, spent the day with her encouraging her to eat and drink. i dont understand what you mean "a human friend" , it is a chicken and an animal, and yes a pet, therefore i will not kill her myself. You dont have a dog and kill a dog with your own hands. If it ends up that she dies overnight then she dies, if she survives she survives, I appreciate what you are saying but the way you have sent that message is very rude. Everyone cares about their chickens on this site and i do too, but i have done all i can and cannot get to the vet until monday as they are not open, only for emergencies. They will not class a chicken as an emergency. If it was a weekday the issue would be different. I live in the country and on a farm without any neighbours about. And i have owned chickens for 2 years now so have had many chickens die on me, many of them being put down by the vet, i have anti biotics and eye drops for when they get sick and any remedy going from the feed store so to say that i am not a responsible owner is pathetic. I think you need to keep your opinions to yourself pastryman

Thankyou for the suggestion lillypad, we have tried cat food but only have the jelly type, i have mashed it down as much as i can, she has ate a small amount of food but mainly drinking sugar water!

This site is not meant for people keeping opinions to them self.

You cannot seriously compare a chicken to a human. There is a totally different level of help to get when people get sick or in pain.

And you say it very well yourself. There is not a lot of help to get when you have a sick chicken. That is why it is your responsibility to make sure your chickens are not left in this kind of pain. It is your animals and not animals in nature.

By just giving food and water, but no help from a vet, you are probably just making it suffer for longer time. But lets not be honest/ clear/frank/rude. That is more important than anything. I am sure your chicken agree when it is pulling itself around by the beak.

Well the chicken (babs) seems to be making more progress now, she is more alert and eating cat food. Her feet will grip onto the perch when i sit her on, its just getting her to use her legs and building up her strength so i am doing regular physio. She is not in any pain from what i can tell and as her owner i will do all i can for her until it is obvious she is in pain. The questions i asked was is this a possible stroke? and alot of very kind people gave me some great advice which i am thankful for.

How old is your hen? Did she receive a Mareks vaccine? She is showing weakness on one side that is a possible symptom of Mareks disease. This is not a diagnosis, but you might want to read about some of the many symptoms of Mareks, and decide for yourself. Hens can have just some or many of the symptoms. Here is some info:

well.. shes has the runs but the leg thing her leg dosnt go back lit that or forward lik on the middle lin. she can bare weight just has trouble.. idk.. I caked the stores around and no one carries a vaccine.

Often they drop their wing for balance if they have a leg injury, this is why she pulls wing up then drops wing back down.

Feel her leg,can you feel any swelling or any odd angle leg is sitting at? Check for dislocated tendon. To check for tendon issue, feel back of leg from hock(leg joins body)to shank(scales start)press down while doing this,if tendon has slipped you can feel it,it feels springy/wobbly/loose like an elastic band. Press down on tendon, you will feel it snap back into place.

Repost with findings.

Probably has the runs due to pain and only drinking water, not eating.
