I have a RIR hen who appears to have an enlarged crop. She is roosting and acting ok but is open mouth breathing. It has been a couple of days. Could she be crop bound and what do I do about it? Thanks.

you can give her a few drops of oil and massage it a bit. some times they eat grass clippings or something that blocks the way and have problems getting it down....it can kill a chicken....I hope she has emptied out by tomorrow. If not, some oil and massage it gently to see if it can be manipulated.
It may need to be flushed by a vet, or you could do it if you know how....
I was very unsuccessful in my recent run in with this.....

Two days ago I operated on a young cockerel that was crop bound. My daughter and I gave him oil and water for two days before I gave up and operated.

He is still alive, eating and drinking. I am certain he will make it as long as infection does not start.

We found a wood chip blocking his crop when we opened him up.
