One of my very old hens, whom ive had for years now, is either dying or eggbound. I need help, im not positive if im right or wrong and would like to see if anyone has an idea. She's breathing heavy and constantly making like a tiny little croak. Her bottom feels fatter than usual and shes constantly keeping her eyes closed. Cant get her to really eat or drink or even really move. Shes been in my house for 1 day in the ac offered her water she ate some layer mash and mealworms but not enough. Small drinks of water. Please, help me with my family chicken. :(

If she may be dying, I would not bathe her, but you can place her on a thick towel on top of a LOW heating pad. Has she laid any eggs recently or has she stopped? How old is she? She might have something going on in her lower belly, such as ascites (water belly, ) or a reproductive disorder, such as internal laying or salpingitis. Will she drink some water with electrolytes and vitamins?

To check for an egg, you can insert a clean or gloves finger inside her vent 1-2 inches. Is she able to poop?

Sadly she may be 3 years old maybe older. She is pooping, i will definitely take her out of the water and dry her up and put her on a heating pad. She seems to enjoy the water and has relaxed into it. But i have to put her back because i must got shopping and will probably pick up some electrolytes on the way. My hens arent really cooped up and the lay almost anywhere and we have never found an exact spot where they repeatedly lay. So im not sure when she last layed.

If she is pooping, she probably is not egg bound. It sounds more like she has a reproductive disorder or ascites. Sometimes these hens may waddle or have trouble getting around for more than a few steps. I would make her comfortable, and she shouldn’t need the heat since she is not eggbound. Offer some mushy chicken feed, perhaps a little cooked egg, and water with electrolytes for a few days.
