I have had poultry since October, (so I’m still a newbie) and I think I may have my first case of an egg bound pullet.
I was out of country for just over a week, and my neighbor was kind enough to take care of my chickens while I was gone. He reported no incidents. Yesterday I notice one of my pullets (RIR, born Thanksgiving and has been laying consistently for several months) sitting in her box. Now, she is my most vocal layer, and she likes being dramatic and takes forever to lay her egg. It’s rather amusing. However, she seemed to take an extra long time, but I didn’t think anything of it. Later I found her out of the box and an egg in the box beside the one she was laying in, but thought it looked smaller than her normal. Again, I didn’t really think anything of it. She could have potentially popped into that other box and laid her egg, or another pullet could have laid beside her.
Later that evening when I closed their coop door, I noticed her again in the box and she fluffed up, so I decided to “feel” her. She felt like she had an egg, so I checked later that night, and she still felt like she had an egg, possibly stuck.
Now today, she is still in her box, and has been since I checked her this morning. However, I’m not actually 100% sure she’s the same chicken from yesterday.
I have 3 RIR, all of which are laying (1 just started 2 weeks ago) and the one I suspect is egg bound, I can’t actually tell apart from the one that just started laying. (The 3rd is my baby and I can tell her apart as she’s slightly lighter in color (hatchery RIR)) I could actually have been checking on 2 different RIR’s that are just enjoying screwing with me. Lol
That being said - if she is in fact egg bound... what can I do to help?
