my chickens have been acting wierd but fine for months. it started in the late fall and has recently gotten worse. They shake thier heads and try to gag something up almost like they are choking, no discharge, no visible worms in feces. Not actually coughing anything up, nothing. they eat, and drink just fine, run around like normal birds, fight a bit here and there over treats but nothing other than the gagging and head shaking. I have read to treat this with ivermectin if it is gape worm, but i don;t know how much and if it is topically or orally. someone had said i could tell by looking in thier mouths but the ones that have been doing it longer are 14 lb. Roo Wyandottes that try to eat me every morning as it is. I'm supposed to grab them, open thier mouth and look down there? Ha! anyway, I worry about them even the Attack Roos. I love every last one of them and my kids all claim them. I love to see them eat worms and spiders and such, so I am going to start worm farming to make sure they get treats that won't cause a problem. Thanks for all the help in advance.

What do you feed them and about how big is it also you should de-worm them every six months and treat them for external paristites.

they eat layer crumbles with 1 lb. grit per 40 lbs. of feed and about 1/2 oyster shell calcium mixed into a large folgers coffee can mounted on an upside down dog bowl. It was my first attempt at a large hanging feeder. Works well. But do I de worm with tpoical ivermectin that I already have or do I do it orally with something else? I had a mite issue with pet rats i had about a year ago, took them to the vet and they gave me a small bottle of ivermectin to put between thier shoulder blades. 24 hours after treatment and bedding changes the mites were dead and the rats were fine, didn't know if i would do it similarly on a chicken. and either way would i have to not eat the eggs after such a medication? Like I was serious when i said i am new to this. and if i am supposed to deworm every 6 months then I am about 6 months too late.

Don't worry just give them a 1ml shot of ivermentin between their shoulder blades and after that go down to your local feed store get a powder form external parasite control and give em all a good dust bath. Oh and be sure to wash you hand after and don't get any in their eye for the treatment powder is known to be toxic.

Oh and DO NOT eat the eggs for over like a month I think. I have to do my girls hear soon but ya I think that it is one month.
Best of luck.

thank you so very much. I have been scared $h!tless, i had a friend who lost one of hers within 3 weeks of getting gape worm. Tomorrow is supposed to be up tp 50F here so i will get some powder and throw them out of the coop and then sprinkle it in and while i treat them with the ivermectin. You have been a hen saver!

ivomec will kill the external parasite also and the gape worms....for 30 days.. it kills anything feeding on them like lice and mite, reason not to eat the eggs for 30 days
