I had 5 Seramas I have been raising together...3 pullets and 2 roos...that are just now 6 months old. Last weekend I sold a pair, leaving me a trio. They have plenty of room for the 3 of them, even more now that the other 2 are gone. The day before yesterday, I noticed one of the pullets wandering around as usual, but the other one was just laying down. I figured she was dustbathing or just felt like laying there. I didn't think much of it until when I went to close them up that night, she was still just laying there. I opened the door and she got up and moved to the other side of the pen. So I figured she was ok. The next morning I tossed in some scratch and she didn't get up...she was also not up in her roosting spot with the other pullet.

I picked her up and started feeling for injuries and didn't feel anything. The only thing weird that she did, was when I slightly pressed on her ribs and surrounding areas, she would stretch her body out and tense up, almost like she was trying to lay an egg. I picked up the other pullet and did the same to her....no reaction. I immediately assumed that my 'injured' pullet must be eggbound (I only got one egg that day). So I brought all 3 in the house, not wanting to separate them, and gave the one pullet a warm bath. After she was dry I put her in the cage with the other 2. The next morning I found 2 eggs in their cage.

I took her out, hoping she would be better after laying the egg, but she wasn't. I put her on the floor to walk around and she sort of waddled. She walked slow and would catch herself with her wings. This morning I found another egg right behind where she was laying and she refuses to walk at all. I put her on the floor and she just laid there, with her wings sort of out to her sides. When one of my cats came close, she scooted around in a circle, but that was it.

If she is still laying, she can't be eggbound, right? Her eyes are bright, no sign of illness or injury. My second thought was maybe the roo injured her during mating. But would she get progressively worse over the 3 days? She doesn't act like she's in pain though. She moves her head and pecks just fine, moves her wings. She won't perch or push against my hand with her feet. I can move her legs and feet and press all over them, she doesn't seem to care.

*They have not been outside in months, due to the cold
*They get the same food as all other chickens
*They have their own pen and no access to other chickens
*They have all been together since hatching
*The pullets have been laying for a couple weeks now
*The other pullet and roo are healthy and acting normal
*She is not showing any other abnormal behavior...no jerky movements or anything

*A vet visit is not an option here...all we have are towny vets that don't know much about anything but cats and dogs. Plus I don't have the extra money right now to take her to one if it did exist.

I am at a loss. Any ideas or suggestions?

This seems to be a common problem. There is another thread right now about the exact same thing. Make sure their feed is very fresh. You might want to give her a supplement, such a poly-vi-sol w/o iron, 3 drops per day, beside her beak until she slurps it down. This is the one possibility I found:
http://www.poultryhub.org/index.php/Rickets_and_cage_layer_fatigue

If that sounds possible, you would want to provide her oyster shell, in addition to her layer diet, and the vitamin supplement. The other possibility is an infection in the hocks--do her hocks feel swollen or warm?

Thanks for taking the time to reply

No part of her legs are hot and not showing any sort of bowing. Not sure if its Rickets, but it could only help to give her some vitamins and calcium. I will make sure I get some today. If she improves with them, maybe that will be my answer.

She still looks perky and alert. Eyes are clear and she's not sleepy or puffy. She looks a little more upright today, but not yet standing. Just not as smushed to the ground with her wings out for balance as she has been.

I will keep her separated til I am sure she is strong enough to be back around the roo.

Well I think my little pullet is getting better...slowly. Yesterday I caught her standing up to eat and drink. Then last night, my son ran in to tell me she was walking around her cage. I still can't get her to perch very well and she is a little unsteady on her feet yet. She will only walk for a little bit and then has to rest. At least she is standing and walking though. She is also using her feet to push off and try to grab for stuff when I am holding her, thats a definite improvement.

She hasn't laid an egg in 2 or 3 days. I hope she has just stopped laying due to being brought inside and being hurt.
