1) Brahma, about 5 days old, feels lighter than other similarly aged chicks. Purchased from Hoovers Hatchery, vaccinated against Mareks and Coccidiosis.
2) At the initial concern chick just had a different sounding chirp which I now believe to be a distress chirp. Now chick is lethargic, and just overall seems weak. Will drink if beak is dipped, but not actively interested in food or water.
3) about two days
4) No other chicks with the same symptoms.
5) No bleeding or obvious injury, but chick is puffed up and crop feels full. The chick’s lower neck/abdominal area feel as if there is no breastbone? Hard to explain. And chick has pasty butt which I have been treating with warm epsom baths followed by warm dryer before returning to brooder.
6) I can think of two possible traumas but neither are for certain. One is that i did catch my cat sticking his paw through the chicken wire. I immediately removed him and there was no obvious injuries to any chicks.
The second is that the 3 year old daughter of my friend was over and snuck into the room where the chicks are kept. She had been shown proper handling technique previously, BUT when I discovered her she had one chick in each hand and she definitely COULD have squeezed from the surprise of being caught. I did calmly approach her and help her to put the chicks away carefully, and neither chick was noticeably injured. I’m not even sure if the chick in question was one of the ones she had in hand.
7) All my babies are currently eating Medicated MannaPro Chick Starter Grower and drinking from a waterer that includes Hydro-Hen. I also added a small amount of apple cider vinegar this morning at the recommendation of a loval chicken group to possibly help the chick in question.
8) Chick has pasty vent with fairly normal stool color and urine deposits. No visible blood.
9) So far I have only treated the pasty vent with cleaning and the addition of ACV to the water.
10 ) I would prefer to treat at home.
11) I will attach photos of the chick in question.
12) all chicks are currently in a brooder that was made from a corner piece dresser that we repurposed.
