I have noticed for the last 3 night possums in the tree near my coop. I set up a live trap on day 2 and haven’t gotten one yet but I’m looking for a way to deter them away from the coop. I read online to use urine from a predator and I do have cats in my home. So what I was wondering was if I can use the litter box waste in the coop to help? I use pine pelllets in both the coop and litter box so it would mix well. Terrible pic of the possum included. TIA for your help

As long as the opossum cannot get into your coop or run, you are fine. They will mostly go after your eggs before ever trying to get your chickens. Just have a secure coop you can close your girls in at night and have a secure run as well. Opossums are way less dangerous for your birds than a raccoon is! They do really love eating eggs though.

Thank you so much! That is good to know. Raccoons aren’t really a problem where I live but I will still keep my eyes peeled!

If you think they're hungry and want to take no chances, you can buy a large bag of the cheapest cat food you can find, place it in a large bowl or small bucket, and set it by the tree they're in.

A hungry opossum will take chances to get in on the eggs, but if he's full, he wouldn't bother.
