Post Edits: Why The Explanation?

Maybe this would be a good example to explain an edit, but I just decided to post instead. A friend of mine here on BYC sent me a message asking if I was okay, because I don't usually 'rant' (referring to this thread). Just to be clear, I meant my question in a very light-hearted way, I hope others don't think I'm seriously complaining here! I don't care if people edit their posts, I was only curious!

It can be confusing if multiple people respond to a post and then the information is changed in that post later. If they mention what they edited, things often make more sense to me, as I'm reading. There have been cases where nothing in a thread made any sense to me at all, because the post was edited later. So, if I edit, I just mention what I edited, usually because I added something I forgot. I don't think it makes any difference for things like spelling, but for content, I think it helps.

Yes, I totally understand explaining or clarifying content, it's the spelling thing that I was really referring to. I mean, we don't really need to explain that we're correcting a misspelled word, just correct it.

I didn't think you were ranting, I have wondered this also.

Edited for nothing LOL. Or do I need to:oops:? Now that was mean, sorry:rolleyes:. How do they explain why they edit the post? I may really need to edit something.

Don't worry Laura... it sounded lighthearted to me....
The only time I have used 'Edited to add'.. is when I have thought of something else in a long winded post and run out of 'Also's and 'However's and other ways to begin a new sentence.. LOL

When I edit, I edit for spelling errors only.

It annoys me when I see that I've misspelled a word. I really try
not to do that.

If I need to add to a post, I prefer to make an additional post in
the same thread.

But that's just me...I try to keep things simple, make my posts easy
to read and understand. Some folks, like the Farm Boy and Imp get
confused very easy.

Yes, that's what I do too, just add to the thread.

And thanks caspernc and squishy.... just thought I'd make sure. See now, I could have edited my post to make it clear it was lighthearted, but instead I opted to add to the thread!
