Hello!

I'm currently raising multiple bird types--my general egg flock (Australorpes, mixes, olive eggers, Marans, etc.), and my heritage meat birds, plus chicks of both. Currently, I have them in various locations: a six-nest coop and dog kennel run, a fantastic triangular chicken tractor, and a wee rabbit hutch, but now I'm starting fresh, with a brand new coop.

I'm trying to mine ideas. Please, give me your ideas, your photos, your caveats, your musta-dones, and your never-shoulda-dones. Thanks in advance!

Here's where I am so far:
  • I'm in Oregon, so climate is pretty temperate
  • I'm thinking a large single unit, with two runs off of it.
  • I can keep feed in there, in metal rubbish bins.
  • I'd like to have a space for a brooder/hatching in there.
  • It has to look GREAT, as it will be in the front half of our semi-rural property, which soooort of breaks code. But if it looks good, nobody will complain!
  • I have considered buying a shed and adding in the parts I want, but that seems really spendy. I'm a good hand at barns and sheds, so mostly I need it to be configured in a great way.
  • There is some issue of dampness in the area we want to put it. Not all the time, but in the winter, yes.
So give me your best dream coops, if that was your flock!

I really like the mobile coops. Just put it up on skids and your chickies can have fresh grass every day. When there is snow on the ground, simply move it close to the house!

For that many hens, you are looking at either one gigantic, non-mobile barn, or two to three mobile ones. I would go with the latter. But it's up to you.

Things I like:

Vermiculite floor
Removable roosts, each 18" higher than the next, not to be at right angles of each other
Pop door at 18" above the coop floor (to keep shavings in)
Human door (with easy-sweep doorway)
Plexiglass window
Lotsa ventelation that can be opened and closed
Outside nest boxes, 18" off of coop floor
Hardware cloth, not chicken wire
Overhang for shade and rain runoff
Covered run

This is mine it's not done in the inside
