I find myself studying all the posts begging people to tell them their chicks are pullets, not roos!!

It seems lots of us are sweating out the weeks until the signs are unmistakable - hen or roo? Every day it seems I notice signs of maleness in one more of my "pullets," and I groan "not you, too!" I know I am in complete denial about one beautiful blue rock/EE cross that is 10 wks and has a nice red comb. No crowing so there's still a ghost of a chance it could be a pullet.

Surely some of you have photos of chicks that seemed to be roos that turned out to be pullets - please post them and give us hope!

PLEASE give us hope!

Thanks for this board. Made a board about my precious banty cochin that was growing a red comb... Everyone said roo.

But I'm hoping he's a girl. I saw him doing the chest bumping thing with another expected roo today, though. He's five weeks old today.

Good luck to you!

This is my golden-laced wyandotte, Wynona. She's from McMurray hatchery, and this is how she looked at 4 weeks:

I was sure she was a male, based on thick legs, broad body, very slow feathering, and upright posture. This is how she looked at 7 months. Much nicer than my SLW ever was, and very broad of body. She's really pretty, in my opinion, and lays a beautiful, big egg nearly every day.

I was sure one of my birds was going to be a roo. Late to feather in the cape. Different shape to the body. First one to get red comb and wattles. We named her Lola, thinking we had one of those she-was-a-he moments.
Sorry, the first one is so blurry. Lola still has down in her cape feathers.

Lola had such nice red comb and wattles. The other bird in the pic is only 3 weeks younger. (The one I bought to replace Lola, once her maleness became obvious.)

Well, Lola looked like this at about 5 months...
She is the bird on the left.

And, guess who laid the first egg? Yes, it was Lola.

Well, these are encouraging! I had a Columbian Wyandotte today face off with the blue rock/EE-very-likely-a-roo. 12 weeks and just a little redder comb/wattle than his/her sister - could it be the he/she is a she that is not going to be pushed around?

That is encouraging.

My banty doesn't stand like a roo and feathered out really fast. Has a very nice disposition... I just can't believe she would be a roo. But the comb just screams "ROO!"
