I wish the crows were out here today too Sarah..there is a lone osprey , has been circling the farm all day..he is crying and crying , Im guessing hes missing another osprey..Its funny to watch the birds reactions..the buffs all run inside..the whites all run to me..they have a hawk aframe..

At first everyone going about thier day like normal.

This 5 mo old just heard the eagle cry

He comes running to momma..I'll protect him.

The pullet hears the eagle too

at this point all of the buffs are inside

running toward the barn

Finnally the other cockeral came flying over to hang with me..
Smart kids. They all look super too ! We had 2 pair of Peregrines flying and diving overhead this afternoon. The pair that nests about 400 yards away must have raised a pair of babies this year. Very fast boogers. All the Buffs ran in , and I quit shoveling 6 tons of sand just long enough to lock the gates. Amazing how fast the babies have learned about predators over head.

Aveca, Galanie, a friend of mine who was plagued with hawks has been using fishing line which she runs between the trees and poles, is claiming that it worked miracles for her. As I understand, during the day, the lines' shimmer deters the hawks. She has them running all over the place. She raises Bresse for some restaurants; hawks were causing her plenty of grief.

Also, I have noticed that good number of vineyards started to use iridescent plastic ribbons which they tie onto a line which sits couple feet above the plants. I tried it on couple of our fruit trees which worked relatively well. I wonder if they would deter for the hawks as well.

dont know about hawks, but the orchards use Mylar tape or ribbon in the trees. wonder if it would confuse a hawk

Thanks Vickie..Lual not a bad idea about the fishing wire..so far keeping them in the smaller day pens has detered any attacks...they cant figure an angle to attack..boy those babies do learn quick chipmunks start making warning calls if there is anything on the ground to worry about and they all run to the barn..blue jays and crows sound the alarm for things they see..funny how they have this relationship with the warning calls of chipmunks and blue jays..the second a chipmunk starts they all go running..

Monofilament and fishing line the same thing.....right?

Aveca- the whites are very nice but would soon look like mud balls here

I would also think the whites would stand out more for a predator and harder for them to hide. We have not been plagued with predators from above but have had our share of ground dwelling ones but like Dragonlady said: a good hot wire keeps them at bay.

I have sparkly pipe cleaners on my wires as well. These young hawks are really stupid though, and will chance anything. Once a hawk is on the ground, it is very fast, and can hem up birds.Better safe, than sorry.
