Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

I'm new to orps also but from what I've learned hens (of any breed) never get saddle feathers. Add that with crowing I think you have a Marty. If the saddle feathers are shinny and pointy its a Roo.

Hi! I'm new to chickens and I believe our black Orpington may need a name change. She's currently Mary but I think she may be Marty. I would love some input! She (he?) is currently 5 months old. None of our flock have started laying yet but he/she has started growing those pointy yellowish saddle (I think) feathers and has started crowing. It's not just a little noise, it's legitimate crowing. I've read that sometimes a hen may do the dominant thing and act like a rooster but I think we may actually have a rooster on our hands. If anyone has some insight, I'd appreciate it!

The first picture is Mary by herself and the second picture is Mary with our lavender Orpington, Violet, and our Barnevelder, Henrietta.

Hens don't get saddle feathers so that would be a sure sign. As far as my experience goes, it would also depend on how old she was when her comb and wattles really took off developmentally. My 4 week old cockerels had an obvious difference to the pullet. Now they are 8 weeks the have big red combs and good sized wattles. The pullet still has little to no pale yellow comb. And you can also compare their leg size. The cockerels have obvious thicker and larger legs and feet than the pullet. There is nothing about their stance or feathers that could tip me off yet, but the combs wattles and feet are really obvious.

Added two new Orps! A Lavender and a black. They are pretty dirty and they'll probably need a molt before their feathers look pretty, but beggars can't be choosers. I'm admittedly a novice in the Orp department so any advice, critique, etc. is welcome. I'm not starting a breeding program or anything, just want some good layers. Thanks!
