Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Flotilla has his own pen. He is just turned 7 months old. And a rear view of my BBR Orp pullet. Flo's girl for now.

The one BBR Orp pullet is 6 & 1/2 months ole is in with him. I will start to incubate some eggs with them here starting this week. I have had nice results of these traits being passed down in my Birchen Orp project pen. But this girl is the one who displays the best Orp traits of all my project birds including my Lavenders. She is special!

Here is one of the Birchen offspring. This gives me hope to have some nice BBR's. I only hatched two of these Birchen eggs out so far. I have mostly been hatching my standards.

Here is a promising Splash. Most of my Blue's have a smidge of UK blood. But not all. I am very much going to be very picky this year with the standards I keep. No cut-away-chests!

My broody hatched two orpington eggs that I acquired - I was told they were "mix-colored" orpingtons. My questions are related to the brown chick.

One day old

Almost 3 weeks old (with EE of same age)

He has quite a comb already and is quite a bit larger than the rest - am I right in assuming a male? What are your thoughts on the coloring?

i hatched some chicks that were from a lot of pure breed orps that were together so i got some buff and some black and some buff black crosses. a couple of my buff black crosses look like your chick there. the ones that were boys got a very red large comb by 2 1/2 weeks. it is hard to see in your pic but i wouldn't re home it just yet. may still be a pullett. my birds are only a little older than yours and are so beautiful. your baby looks just as cute as mine. congrats

My 2 Black Mottled Orpingtons...I cannot wait to see them all grown up. And I was just told another one has hatched so I am getting that one as well. There is about 2 weeks difference in their ages.

cut away chest literally looks like someone debreasted the bird! he has a really good picture of one! you can basically draw a line of where the breast would naturally be based on the flow of the birds outline, but in a cut away breast bird, it will be sorely lacking.

latebloomer...they are almost 8 and 6 weeks old respectively....the newest one which I have to pickup still is only a couple days old.

What do you mean by no "cut away " chests???
thanks...I'm trying to learn what to look for trait wise in my Orps.

As Sib said. Orpingtons are suppose to have a full rounded chest. IF you ever seen the cartoon of Foghorn Leghorn you see an exaggerated cut-away- chest. A full rounded breast or chest would look like a half of a ball infront of the bird. This pic from a book printed in 1910 should show what is the breast you would want. Many of todays Orps have been bred with other breeds introduced for various reasons and you do not see too many with the full chest like the White hen in the upper right.
