Yes be open to using another IF that one fill out more. The term that applies when breeding is "TYPE". You can correct most everything else over time. But it is very hard to build size quickly when breeding. Go to some APA shows. Find breeders of Blacks and ask them if they have any culls that look better. I bought a $20 Buff Orp cock last year from one of the best Orp breeders in the country and he has already given me better Buffs then I had before. You can get away with hatchery quality hens if yoy have an exceptional quality male in a breeding program. Do not be afraid to ask around.
It was pointed out to me in the Ameraucana thread that my Am cockerel is also too skinny. Then I was asked if they were free ranged. My chickens have full access to over 40 acres of pasture and woodland, and they go pretty far some days. So that might have something to do with how thin my cockerels are. They have access to free choice food, but they would rather scratch under trees most of the day. Just a thought.So maybe this guy will end up filling out nicely after all.
