Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

At the Greenville Ohio Show last spring, I was at a table eating lunch with Doug Akers and a half dozen equally as great breeders of other breeds. A little kid came up and asked Doug how big should an Orp be?
Doug said:
"Breed them as big as you can make them"

When someone who has won as many shows as Doug gives advice I listen.
What you are telling us then is to ignore the SOP in regard to weghts ? More than 2 lbs over is a DQ, just as are side sprigs, stubs or split wings. Maybe the standards ought to be revised to make these huge birds legal if that's what the judges want , or will they soon ignore the other DQs as well ?

Ok you gals have come up with some good people... but do take in mind.. honestly.. that is not many! And what is wrong with having a new line of nice blacks?? I certainly don't see the harm in it.

A new line of PURE blacks would be nice. We just had this discussion in regard to blacks from blue and chocolate breeding. I question if we need a new line that will throw mixed up colors in it's gene pool. A little predictability is a nice thing. Not everyone wants a science experiment.

What I am saying is I rather listen to Doug Akers, who wins shows that have more then 2,000 birds entered. And not just once but multiple times a year. Year in and year out his birds win. Who is a licensed APA judge. Who has birds that have wider heads, longer backs, not too fluffy, perfect color, excellent type. This is a public forum where we can exchange ideas and knowledge. Anyone who wants to breed their birds the way you suggest can do so. I am just letting you know do not expect to beat Doug, Alan, Bill, Fred at these large shows. Harry told me last nite it is alot easier to breed a bird down in size then up in size.
In this pic the reason I took it on my floor model freezer is to give some comparison for size. IF I took the pic of the bird by itself you could say a bird is huge until you put it next to something where people can tell that is one big honking bird.
Or in this case you can see this bird starts at one end of the freezer and ends at the other side of the freezer.

Really? i didnt think they were that good haha :)
The whole story of bella has been so entertaining..what a great story it has been..and I dont know how you do it..but you have a talent for photos..look how cute that chicken is en every picture.the schoolyard .your concern over the chickens ..kids would eat that right up in a good story book...I got caught up in your story.

there was a great award winning book called my life as a turkey LOL! it reminds me of that story a bit..they made a film of it on PBS..where it won even more awards..
