I am new to Orps so my experience is very limited but I will say the oldest cockerel I had was horrid. I thought/think it may have had something to do with me keeping him separated from my pullets for a very long time (I had various ages of pullets so some were way too young to be in with him). I put him with them when they matured enough but he was brutal. I gave him a few weeks to calm down only allowing him with them if they were free ranging but he did not get any better. He was housed in a pen inside their pen so they had had months of contact through the fence. Are Orpington roosters typically aggressive with the ladies? He is constantly jumping the girls, ripping feathers out, chasing them...he's really not very nice about it and the girls do not like him.
The ones I've had, that would be not typical at all.Are Orpington roosters typically aggressive with the ladies? He is constantly jumping the girls, ripping feathers out, chasing them...he's really not very nice about it and the girls do not like him.
NOT typical of Orp boys ! You might try putting him in with your oldest hens, who MIGHT teach him some manners. If not....chicken soup. Are Orpington roosters typically aggressive with the ladies? Most quality Orpingtons are gentlemen. However, some hatcheries have introduced Leghorn and/or ? lines to increase production. Are yours from a quality SOP breeder or a hatchery? In the rare times we had a more aggressive male of good quality, we would try to retrain him. Place him in a time out pen... alone... for a few days. You want fertile eggs, so allow him with the hens about every 3rd day or so. If he continues to be aggressive, hatch all you can and invite the aggressive fellow in for a nice hot pot of chicken and dumplins!
Most of the Buff Orpington eggs on eBay today are from hatchery source flocks. They are nice, pretty and resemble the breed. But they are not like what Thedragonlady, HallFamilyFarm and many others on this thread raise.
