Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

I would like to introduce my baby Orpingtons:
Even though we had chickens for over 15 yrs. this is my very first experience with baby chicks, and am enjoying each and every moment of it. I wanted to share my babies photos with you. They were bred, and hatched by Deanne- Just Strutting Farms. Waiting for the babies to be born was a very long 21 days..After they mature, I am looking forward to adding Jubilee, Crele, and Buff, Orpingtons into my small menagerie.
The sire of my babies' is; Mr. T, who is a very handsome, sweet, huge black rooster from Marc Sarce. Please note that; if my babies' quality is not up to par, my intentions of posting the photos was not to cause insult or upset. Deann has the photos and info as to their lineage in her website: juststruttingfarms.com. When they grow up, they will be my models for some of my paintings.
I wish everyone a wonderful evening!

One day old.

2 days old.

7 days old. These babies are 9 days younger than the first group posted above.

7 & 16 day old. I knew chicks grew up fast; but, had no idea it would be this quick..

Same babies standing next to each other. They are 9 days apart.

20 days old. Such a pleasant surprise to have 2 of the babies to develop stripes and pocodots. I believe there are correct terms of the markings, but did not want to make a mistake and embarrass myself by misquoting. What would you call their markings?

20 d. old.

20 day old.

I hope I did not post too many photos. I am just over the moon about having them.... : )
I would love to hear what you think of my babies.
That is what this thread is about...sharing pictures. When I saw the word pocodots, the term mottling came to mind.

Cute babies ! If you can get your future models to stand still long enough to sketch them, we'd love to see your art work too!

They would be cuckoos, the mottles wouldnt get the color in their feathers like that until at least they get their adult feathers some times even after they go through their first molt

ARRGH! Mallory, my "problem child" blue orp is in protective custody again. Only this time it's more from herself than from her flock mates. My husband noticed that she had an odd gait yesterday, so we pulled her out of the coop last night after dark and took a closer look at her. Her left leg made horrific popping and crunching sensations when we put it through range of motion. Today she was almost non-weight bearing on it, so I took her to work with me to see Dr. Sandra. She agreed that it was either a luxation/dislocation or a fracture so we took some x-rays.

Her hip is definitely dislocated, but upon closer inspection it seems that it is dislocated because the acetabulum (socket) is actually broken, although it's not an obvious fracture so we can't really say for sure. She recommended 6-8 weeks of cage rest and increasing her calcium intake to see if it would heal on it's own. Now we're not really sure where to go from here. Keeping her caged won't really be a problem, I have a cage just the perfect size for that set up for her already. I am a little worried about her getting "cabin fever" being confined for so long, but the mercy of being a chicken is that I don't think they suffer quite as much mentally as more intelligent animals without enrichment/stimulation. And when the weather warms up I can always move her cage outside so that she can see the rest of the flock (right now it's too cold for me to feel comfortable leaving her out there on a bare metal cage floor, plus her water would be frozen in an hour or so). My biggest concern is whether or not that joint will be able to support her weight once she's fully grown and, once she's running with a rooster, how well it will be able to support her weight plus the weight of a mature large fowl rooster. Dr. Sandra feels that it should heal up and scar down well enough and that she'll build enough muscle mass there for her to get around, although she'll always have a limp. But I don't think she really understands just how big orpingtons get. Mallory's only about 20 weeks, and while she's getting very red and did not have any open growth plates on the x-rays I know she's still got a lot more growing left to do. She was only 3lbs 4oz today!

Anyone have any thoughts or experiences on orps with limited mobility/bad joints? She's a sweet bird, and I feel very attached to her as she has just gone through one spell of bad luck after another. First 3 of the 5 chicks and the broody hen that hatched her were killed by what we are assuming was a raccoon, then the other remaining chick was beat to death, literally, by some of the other hens, then they pecked her so badly she was pretty much scalped. And now, just when she was finally fitting into the flock and had actually made a chicken friend of her own, this happens. It will be another week or two before we cull her if that's what we decide to do, but I could really use some outside input to help us decide whether it will be worth it to see if we can heal her or if we would be better off to cut our losses and cull her. Our chickens fall into that strange crack somewhere between pets and livestock. They are not pets, with few exceptions, but I am very fond of them in much the same way I am fond of our pets.

Sweet looking babies. Congrats

Thank you!! I love and adore these babies..

Well they are cute...wonder where polkadots came from....should be fun to see what they look like around 8 mos..
Thank you! All the babies have the same sire who is a huge, black Orpington, and the mothers are blue, and lavender. Even though I was only planning to keep the girls, have decided to keep the 4 boys with interesting markings until they are about a year old to see them develop. Their breeder is very interested seeing it as well. One of the lavender boy has somewhat similar marking; but, since it is so faint, couldn't capture it with the camera.

Ohhh, it is comforting to hear, thank you! I am a complete novice as to purebred chickens, and do appreciate each and every help!

Thank you! I am hoping that they will be willing to pose for me. Yes, when I complete the paintings, will make sure to post. Please find below a small sample of one of my paintings. It is a detail of a large painting. The three little babies were born on our light fixture by the front door, and since then, they return to nest at the same spot. Well, I like to believe that they are the same parents or one of these babies.

Those might be cuckoos?? I have never seen how either cuckoos or mottles develop
Thank you with your help with the name of the pattern. In the past, we only had black, and buff Orpingtons, which were never bred. It will be quite an interesting experience to see them develop.

There was a kind comment about my babies from a member who had Orpingtons less than a year. Now I am unable to find the original message to reply.
I would like to thank for the nice comment.

I love this watercolor ! I'm a retired fine art and antiques dealer, and I know how good this work is. Love to see your poultry studies. Monty might need his portrait painted too !
