Nice day to take some pics. Tonite and for the rest of the week it will be very nasty here. Lots of rain and ice even some snow. Previous few years my plan was to make my birds backs longer and improve the quality of my Orps tails. This year is about thickness of bone and widening my birds heads. The genetics for wide heads I am hoping to pull out of my Buffs and share that gene with first my Whites, then breed their offspring in 2 generations to my Blacks and eventually to my Blues. My $20 Akers Buff cock is one of the main players in the plan. Since he is waiting for warmer weather, and is not fertilizing his Fred hens, I put him in the barn for a few weeks to let one of his sons take over for now He has the thickness of bone and the wider head. So he will have a couple of weeks to think about his women. I may take him to my newly acquired Akers hen, that I got for "FREE" (I do not want to make money I just love making nice Orps) and LEE's Buff girl who is 10 plus lbs. He does not look too happy, I can't blame him either. His boy is excited to be in a pen with Fred's hens without any of his 8 other brothers. If all goes well I should get some nice Buffs from him and these 2 hens. He has the color and that wide load rear end that his daddy has. Fred's hens are gorgeous. I got the last of what he sold from 2 seasons ago. Well worth the money. One of the 3 other Akers cockerels who I will be sharing with the wonderfully nice Joyce Fuesting from the Boone County 4-H Club. She is the lady who gave me my Buff Sports. She has 2 more Sports to give me. Again these boys have the recessive large head gene that is so hard to pull out without a bunch of test breeding. So, I will be keeping and using all of these cockerels this coming season. One of our country's best White & Buff Orp breeders agree that one should never cull before you test breed your males. He says that even though brothers may be all from the same 2 parents, the genetics may not always be the same 50/50 ratio from each parent. IF one can afford keeping many males it is a good idea. I truelly listen and agree with him. MENTORS are good to have and learn from. He has bred and raise Orps for decades. The other Buff pen has the LEE 10+ lbs hen which is a replica of my original AKERS hens. Much more head width and just in need of a nice top line and tail. Behind her is the fabulous Britt hen I got at Columbus Natls 3 years ago that Danny Padget delivered directly from Terry. Thank you Danny & Terry. This is the boy to do the job for better tail and top line. Should make some nice Buffs. I will be rotating in his 8 other brothers off and on to see who does the best in producing quality Buffs for this coming season. Some of my Black and Blue Orp girls are going to have these Weird Harold boys as their studs. Yosemite is "A" number one in the future in where I like to go. A little frost bite damage sux. But he is not here to show just to breed. He has lost all but a few of the Brown/Red feathers. Nearly totally Black now. Malcolm Xtra is brother to Yosemite. He is the extra back up just incase the inevitable may happen. No where near as nice but a necessary boy to keep around. Malcolm Then there is BLOTTO. The third of the Harold boys. He has a different mom. Last year I really did not utilize Harold as much as I should. MAYBE a dozen or abouts offspring I hatched out from Harold. I was amazed in the quality I got from so few. I am not going to go gung ho on breeding Blues, but it is hard not to at least hatch a few out to see what pops out. BONES the HEAD are BLOTTO's best traits. He could be a bit fuller down in front. BUT LEE's girl PATCHES and my 1st generation daughter of my original pair of BAMMA Blues I got from Julie back in 2009 should cover that trait. Then there is the daughter from FERAN and the BAMMA 75%er UK splash should be interesting, she is hidden behind BLOTTO. No problem in this pen for width. BLOTTO FERAN and the BAMMA splash. The Splash is getting pulled from this pen. ALL Blues will come from the above Blue pen this season. She will no longer be needed here. I will sell her for the whopping price of $15. Only fair to show a pic of Harold. Harold is from my line I made from breeding my 5 original AKERS hens that LEE gave me over 4 years ago to the legendary Meyer's hatchery Black Ameraucana/Australorp mutt. Thank you again LEE for all your expertice. It was LEE's idea to test breed his Akers hens to the mutt. LEE's a genius. That is what GROCHE said on the Australorp thread a few months ago. I can not argue with one of the premier Aussie breeders on BYC. Harold has 16 pullets and hens in with him. Some are from my Australorp breeding program. Since I got the trio from the fella who has the 20 year old Moore line of Whites at the Columbus Show this fall will allow me to play around with the Whites I made from using Harry's White cock that I bred to my Fuesting Buff Sports I made last year. My plan to cross Buff and White to gain the superior genetics that is found in the USA APA Buffs. Using Buff Sports in last years breeding will reinforce those genetics. 1st of 5 Buff/White chicks already hatched. And many more to come. I also have 2 Pontious White Orp pullets I hatched last May. They will be part of the GREAT CUCKOO WHITE test breeding. LURCH is very frisky and happy to contribute his 11 lbs size.
