That looks like a lot of bullfinches I jumped through in England in the late 60s. The hedges hadn't been maintained during and after the war. They were solid cut and laid up to 4', with 12' saplings out the top. Ditches on either side, of course. You had NO idea of what was on the other side if you were in the first flight. No wonder I have a bad back !

I have three Orpington hens, Harriet, Henrietta and Steve. My younger brother got Harriet over five years ago among a set of ten pullets, and stopped looking after his remaining seven girls last year, and the flock was falling apart, becoming sick and broody, not going to bed at night, and walking over our makeshift bridge to scavenge for scraps at the house. I took them on, and sorted the girls out with a firm hand. Then earlier this year I purchased a set of seven chickens from a woman online, this included another black Orpington hen, along with a blue one. I just adore the noises the girls make and their curious kind nature.

This is Harriet, she's a big girl, with gorgeous eyes. She likes to hang around with her light Sussex, Barnevelder, Dorking and Rhode Island Red Friends. Never had a problem with Harriet, she's a gorgeous girl, although she can get a bit broody when she is laying



And this is Stevie (blue Orpington) and Henrietta (black) along with Wanda the Wyandotte. Henry was molting around her head when this photo was taken, as you can see by the whiteness around her head (through the crappy quality iPod photo). Stevie has a benign tumor under her vent, that I finally went to the vet about a few weeks ago. It had been bothering me for about a month before I got it checked out. Thankfully it's not really bothering her, nor is it painful to the touch. She also has a skin infection on her underside that I treated her for with cream. It didn't help it very much sadly, and she's only now slowly beginning to trust me a bit again. Poor Stevie.




Haven't seen any eggs from my new Orpingtons yet, and it's been a while since Harriet last layed, due to the fact we're coming into winter, and she's starting to get up there in terms of years, but I love my Orpingtons anyway! They are gorgeous fluffy birds, I'd certainly love to have more variation in colour, but I guess its not to be

Today, my babies are 3 mos. old. I love watching them run around aimlessly with those huge feet, get excited over tiny treasures they find, and at times trip over their own feet. They are quite large, but, still make the chick sounds, and get frightened over the smallest sounds. They add so much joy to our lives..

I weigh the babies regularly which is a habit I developed raising Pekingese puppies. At first, the chicks were small enough to weigh them on my puppy scale which has a capacity of 6lb.,but, no longer sufficient for them. I bought a new one which goes up to 10 lb. Now, I am wondering how long the new scale will be useful. Needless to say; everybody had to get on the scale today. The 4 boys weigh between 5 5/8 to 6 1/4 lb., and the girls. 4 - 5 3/8 lb. Since I don't have an official growth chart for Orpingtons, I am not able to decifer if they are developing correctly.

Congratulations Bill.

I wish I could say it was my Black who got BB. It was a fella from MI would showed her. Funny story I heard from Doug, he said that bird was so fluffy the breeder had to DE-fluff the lower feathers on the skirt. And the bird still had feathers touching the ground. So for all the UK Orp breeders this should be something to think about. No more threats of DQ'ing for profuse feathers. At least not from this judge.

I am quite surprised as to how fast they are growing. What is the normal weight for the Orpingtons? At what age are they considered adults? At the moment, all of them are out of proportion with disheveled looking feathers. Also, they look like wearing badly made, shabby pantaloons..They look adorable to me but, my husband and friends think they are quite whimsical.
What is a feather storm?
