Here is a pic of my first Orpington! She/he is a week old. She was advertised as a lavender splash but even a newbie like me knew this wasn't the case when I saw her. I'm wondering if there's any chance she might turn out to be a blue? Any insight would be appreciated! I was told she was from j c hink stock.

I didn't realize there was a such thing as lavender splash??? What you have there is a black Orpington. I have a picture of one in my album if you want to compare.

One of my 3-w/old buff orp chicks looks almost as if it has white wing feathers. My whole flock is a rich golden buff... Anyone experienced anything similar?

I am new to Orps myself so I don't know a lot. Is there a chance this chick is a Lavender split? I can't tell much from the color but looks black to me but some blues are very dark. If he/she is a lavender split then it will carry the lavender gene no matter what color it turns out to be (I think). Maybe some of the more experienced Orp people can lend more insight and correct me if I am wrong.

One of my better poultry buddies told me about a conversation with David Pownall he had. David is prolly one of the most respected Orps breeders in the world. David resides in the UK. Paul is Canadian, and an APA judge. Paul said David asked him "why are your American Orp's backs too long?" Paul replied,"why are your UK Orp's backs too short".
Point of this is to stress to folks, that you breed them the way you like them. That is what I am doing. I was told that I should not use a mixed breed bird that I called BUSTOFF by more then one or two of the UOC members. I am glad I did not listen to them.
One of BUSTOFF's great grandsons is daddy to these 2 Blues. The Blue line I was given have thrown shorter backs. To correct that I used one of BUSTOFF's son, my famed Harold the Brown/Red to hopefully throw longer backs & possibly give me bigger heads.
The darker Blue has more of the body I like. The lighter colored Blue has the color I like. Just a matter of time before I get one that fits what I want.

Seems like I will have no problem with longer backs and nice heads in my Whites.

Mouse is one of many Great Great grandson's of the BUS. I have to thank both Harry and Alan for encouraging me to use these males to make some better quality birds. Breeding is such hit and miss. In poultry you best not hesitate in breeding. You need to take chances. So far I like what I am seeing from the grand kids from Harold.
I always like these full rounded breast males. Especially in Black

I think we like a lot of the same qualities in birds except I don't like an extra long back. I really want to see some nice big heads, big chests, ability to see hock and a well proportioned bird in mine. I want to add some height also as I don't like what I consider too short. I don't know if I will continue to work with blues due to the difficulty in getting nice color and lacing. I am just an infant in the world of Orpingtons so I am keeping all my good type blues even if the color is bad and see what happens next year.

Yes it would be a lavender split, and it would carry the lavender gene. If one of the parents was a lavender. The "lavender splash" is what is throwing me off....maybe it was a blue splash? As they can throw black chicks. It is hard to know without knowing the parentage.

Either way it is a cute little bugger, and looks healthy!
