It started raining so I haven't gotten the other pics yet. I don't know his weight but he's massive. I'll get how tall hie is too when I can.

Haven't been on in a while! Somehow, one of my BO hens was found dead in the coop. Mistirious, huh? Also, we've already found two four-five foot long chicken snakes in the coop. That's something you don't exactly want to worry about every time you check for the eggs. We haven't gotten eggs at all this month or half of last month because of these snakes. Any idea as to how I can get rid of these snakes? If I don't get help on this topic as soon as possible here then I'll be making a thread asking the forum what they think.

I hope that never happens again. About your problem the only thing I would do would be to catch him in the act, and kill him on the spot before he gets away. Hope this helps.

I'm sure other people would disagree but if it was me I would kill the snakes. I keep a shovel near the pens just for that purpose. I personally have no use for snakes of any kind. I have a cat to take care of the mouse population and she does a fine job. Others would say to relocate the snakes. But if I have to deal with a snake at all it will be with my shovel.

Ok, Blue and I had a Photo shoot. He does a great job at standing still. Wish the other chickens would do that. So here are several shots from head to toe. I'm pretty sure he's 2' tall. I forgot the tape measure when we did the pictures.

Remember those aren't light spots, his feathers are shiny. I can't imgine if he had a bath how shiny he would get. So, does he look like he can be shown? If not, why. Just inquiring.

Oh, and he was last year's spring chick. So he's aobut 14 months old. He was with some RIR's I had last year and actually produced a couple chicks till he got too big to be with a regular sized hen. He's been a bachelor since. I do have some black and lavender orph chicks that are ladies in waiting. He's impatiently waiting for them to grow up.

I'm hoping I can ask this and I'm not asking the same questions twice, but I spend way too many hours on here every day, and I'm not sure I can make it through a couple hundred pages searching. I'm just starting to learn about dom. vs. rec. genes and new chicken colors that I would have never thought possible.

Could you breed a blue laced red orp? What would need to be bred to get this, if this was in fact possible?

If I'm not mistaken, you breed a black with a splash to get blue, but if you breed two blues, then you get a mix of black, blue, and splash, correct? Then if you bred that batch of black with the same batch of splash, would they still produce blue? Does that make sense?

And could someone please explain to me what causes the splash? And does is matter which color the parent is? Like black roo + splash hen or splash roo +black hen?

All I have right now are hatchery buff orps that have captured my heart. I would love to get a blue and black for my little flock to drool over every day. I guess I was just wondering what the possibilities were in the mixes.

Homestead mama...hope you get your questions answered...one of them I have wondered about....does it matter if it is the hen or the roo as far as color results. I have 5 English/American Orps and 1 is a black roo...kept for breeding purpose. I thought I kept 4 pullets but my favorite...my only "splash"...is starting to get a really pink comb (they are at 7 weeks now I think)....I think my splash may be a roo.
Hopefully someone knowledgeable in the genetic area will tell us.

Main problem I see with the roo is the eye, not sure on the availabilty of blacks over there? maybe limited, but the eye should be a nice black & show no fuzzyness in the pupil shape, shame.

splash is just two copies of the blue gene, blue dilutes black, so 1 copy turns a black blue, 2 copies dilute the black twice into splash.

Over here splash birds tend to be stock birds, you get a better size & strength, so if you have a small black, put it to a large splash, & get good sized blues.

never breed blacks from blue crossing, else you get red leakage in your neck. Keep blacks with blacks, and blues with blue/splash & blue blacks. ( sorry should be clearer )
I mean dont breed a pure black with a blue black, else your line will carry blue ( hidden ) and will mess up things when you need a pure black.
