Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Here is how bbs genes work. Doesn't matter male/female.

BBS genes

Black (BlBl) x Black (BlBl) = 100% Black (BlBl)
Black (BlBl) x Blue (Blbl) = 50% Black (BlBl) and 50% Blue (Blbl)
Black (BlBl) x Splash (blbl) = 100% Blue (Blbl)
Splash (blbl) x Blue (Blbl) = 50% Blue and 50% Splash (blbl)
Splash (blbl) x Splash (blbl) = 100% Splash (blbl)
Blue (Blbl) x Blue (Blbl) = 25% Splash (blbl), 25% Black (BlBl), and 50% Blue (Blbl)

The (Blbl) is the genotype. Big letter (Bl) is dominant, little letter (bl) is reccessive. Blues are always heterozygotes, meaning they carry one black gene (Bl) and one blue gene (bl). Black is homozygous dominant, meaning it carries two black genes (BlBl). Splash is homozygous reccessive meaning it carries two blue genes (blbl).

If you pair the Lavenders with some English Black birds, their type will improve immensely within one generation.

You could keep two pens, one strictly American with Black and Lav birds, the other say an English Black roo over American Lav hens. It would be fun to track the progress between the two pens and see which birds produced better offspring.

Jeremy,
By english , do you mean "imported orps"? all orps are classified as english, even US version..and even australian orps (australorps), also classified as english..and that is a bit of a sore spot with australian breeders.,.So Im thinking you mean the imported birds??...There is a vidio on utube I will get for you guys in england of the black orps out ina feild..they are indeed as big as the turkeys running with them..My neighbor thought the chicks I have from jody were black heritage turkeys..I said my goodness no, those are chickens LOL! They are massive already.. They are being condiditoned for show right now and have made my choice as to who is going...I will post a few pics a little later

Somone gave me a hen a few years ago that they called a "giant australorp"" I knew she was a blk orp..but she was pretty nice huge and must be what you are talking about american version and when crossed into show flock produced what I think is a stunning pullet ..crossed her with rooster from east coast champion australorps..she worked out really well for australorp improvement project...she was from superior poultry when they were in full swing....the pullet from that cross looks like she could pass as australian version..she kept the reqired tighter feather of the roo, and not as big as the hen yet much tail improvement and bigger neck feathers ect...I think a lot of the american blk orps look like show australorps, perhaps over weight limit , I have a freind who shows what look like blk orps as australorps and she gets a little mad when the smaller birds beat her..I said you have too much fluff for that class..australorps are required to keep a tighter feather..englands version of australorps are a bit bigger and fluffier than either US or australian versions.

Don't take this the wrong way but I have to ask... Is he an Orpington or an Australorp??

He just seems a bit long in the back and tail looks more australorpy to me. For showing I would like to see a darker eye and better comb. I would also like to see a more rounded chest for showing. JMO from what I have been learning this past year since I have started showing.

This is my Orpington rooster that I show (plz excuse his 1 whack tail feather)

I was out with my cell phone this morning taking pics of some of the orp babies. I only have time to upload 3 pics.

Here's a Pic of the buff girls hanging out at the feeder waiting for me (Momma Hen to fill)

Now check out the cuckoo in this baby chick. This chick IS 100% Orp and was from another BYC'r. They had Buff, Blue, Black, and white out in a pen and this is one of their babies:

I really like her and won't breed back to her. If I do not sell her I'll just hang onto her for eye candy in my Layer Flock.

Isn't she neat though

Is that a Lav Split black boy? I've seen some of my Black Lav Splits with off eye color. Reason being they are a project bird and still need work. If he's not a Lav Split then I'd say he is mixed with some other kind of Breed. He's very gorgeous but, to high off the ground and narrow. You want your Orp's to be more of a bowling ball chest and low plumage to the ground. Also, I tend to like a more compacted tail with no long tail feathers. It's hard to get but, if you bred the tail feathers out of the line it can help.

Good luck with him and I hope you find him some lady friends

So his eye color rules him out for a show? Just want to clarify. It's not necessary to show him. Just thought if I did it would be nice.

She is neat! I'd like to see what she looks like when she is grown.
