is that a buff cuckoo in there?! they are very sharp looking whatever they are!

I've had this conversation with breeders many times, but still don't understand the answer. How to tell lower grade/hatchery orps from better show stock. Sure when you put the 2 side by side its easier to tell, but looking in 1 source only i have a hard time! Are there key traits to watch for?

I have buff, blue and black chicks from a good breeder, so i expect at least decent potential birds from them, but i also have some blue splash from a different breeder... there are 3 pullets i kept, i sold all the roolings early on. There are 3 of them, all a lovely shade of powder blue with a couple odd dark blue feathers. If they turn out half decent i will use them with a black roo.

My birds all have a very long way to go before they can be truely evaluated for quality. Heck i'm still having a bit of a hard time telling the roos and hens apart on the ones from the breeder. when they were a few weeks old i was sure i had many more roos then hens (as has been my year) but now i'm not so sure... I see a bit more comb then i would expect but there is still less then the other roos.

Hi from Ga. Thought I would share a few Orpington pics.

Buffs LF hatched 6/16

Splash Orpington Bantam hatched 8/2

Lavender Orpingtons hatched 7/1

I will be taking some of these birds to the Moultie swap on the 20th. The only Lavenders that I will take will be roosters, Also I will be taking an assortment of Bantams.

your birds look very good so far nice size an shape.orps are hard to really tell if it is a keeper till about 5 months or so.those birds are suposed to be cuckoos we are selling them we do not know for sure if they are 100% cuckoos we bought them with some buffs.we will be working on breeding our own cuckoos next year an dont want to use birds that i dont know the background of.they are going to there new home next week.next year will be putting some white roos over whites an buffs an i may throught a few black hens in there 2.

I have a BAMMA Black hen who I have posted on Feathersite. I really like her and have her in with my BOSS HOGG.
This is the BAMMA hen. I think her nice stiff tail will go well with BOSS

Here is their offspring. A nice stiff tailed pullet. 1/2 BAMMA Black from the hen above and half BOSS HOGG.

I have a question about orpingtons.I have buffs i year old and baby black blue and baby splash orpingtons,is there a difference in the laying because of the color?This might be a dumb question but I thought I read somewhere that lavenders don`t lay as well as the buffs.
