Let me know what you think of these birds vs. today's birds.
This is a quoted copy of a post off of the English orp thread here on BYC. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/386051/the-imported-english-orpington-thread/7800#post_8598419
I would love to see that link.
Edit: I keep forgetting to post this. Why do the buff Orps I see now let their wings droop? It is pretty common in at least two strains out here in the west. I believe these birds came from OK.

Walt,
You are invited to come and sit on my back deck and watch a bunch of the top dual champion sight hounds in the US lure coursing in my backyard...the 2nd oldest polo field in the country. The function of the lurecoursing hounds does follow function. The straight racing, or show hounds does not. Also...a much nicer bunch of folks!
form to function..americans eat more yellow skinned yellow legged birds..brits much prefer buff or white orp as a table bird..
same thing in horse world..in america tends toward faddish, tiny feet on great big horses, must have a pretty face no matter that it can barley walk out of the barn..europeans wanted a horse that could plow, then pull a sunday cart, or even go to war if need be..at a clinic i went to years ago..a woman in front row said, thems ugly horses about the big warmbloods, theclinitian spun around and scolded her , said the olympics are not a beauty pagent..

Those are all British Orps and they look different now. All of the birds you see winning now in GB look like Cochins with clean legs.........if you can see the legs. Check out the jubilee Orp at the bottom of the page?????? I would not call that an Orp here or in GB. In the US using the APA SOP you have to see legs/shanks.
There is no connection between dogs, horses and other livestock showing. Chickens and the people who show them seriously are not like any other group of show people. We have shown dogs for 35 years. I don't go to the dog shows because I don't like most of the people. The breeding of poultry is far more complex than any other animal I know of.

love the corgie, everybody had those añd jack russles àt the dressage shows..yes order makes me happy. so i miss the metranome of organised footfalls in training..The hunter jumpers are on TV as we speak. Dressage= letter perfect, so you must like everything in order..lol
I can't speak to the British birds, but our Orps are a dual purpose bird if bred correctly. If the show folks were to breed out the egg laying to get a better bird conformation wise, they kind of breed themselves into a corner with chickens No eggs = no chickens.
