I recall Ralph Brazelton talking about this in one of our many phone calls. Forrest Beauford also spoke with me about this. Not everyone knows what the term means. Walt, would you explain this in terms some of the novices can understand?

Give me straight talk if I'm talking foolishness, but after a couple days mulling over this concept, it seems to me that: One would have to breed every bird one ever hatches to be sure none are prepotent. Male, because of the importance of a "prepotent rooster" and female because of the importance of a "prepotent hen." Just doesn't sound feasible. Or am I off base? And Lordy, the huge font is just weird. No disrespect intended. It's just that I have all settings so that these old eyes can read the normal text then this GIANT text slaps me.

Prepotency in critters is a phenomenom that no body has figured out. I made a bet with a horse friend about Secretaritat. He wanted a colt. I wanted a filly sired by him He thought I was nuts. We bet $100. Knowing that Mother Nature likes to skip a generation to ensure survival of the species through genetic diversity, and knowing that Secretariat 's mother's sire was Princequillo, a known broodmare sire, I figured that he would produce great females. I was called nuts for discounting the great Bold Ruler, his sire.. Guess what...Secretariat never sired exemplary colts , but his fillies are priceless. They are prepotent for the most part.

Something many will find interesting... Studies done in AI in sheep at Perdue, verified that ova are immune to the same genetic combination that was last produced.The identical sperm are walled out. So if you get a great breeding; next time breed out. Then breed back. The ova will no longer be immune. The great producing mare, Hildene, was bred this way, and produced top stakes winners in every crop, while Man O' War's mom was never bred to another stallion except for his sire, Fair Play. He was never replicated.

I can't believe that chickens are any different. How many families have you seen where the first child looks like Mom, the second like Dad, and so on?

Not a difficult Concept ( Prepotency) don't focus on it to much stick to genetics. Walt explained it very well here it is, same but other version. If You Have a Strain of Highly Inbred (High Coefficient of Inbreeding) but Vigorous Stock of any kind and when using an Exceptional Male or Female for Multiple Years you will run into Birds that Do just what they should if you understand Genetics; Just for some variable we don't know about a particular Animal Passes on His Traits Extremely Well. I Personally believe in, and breed using Genetics. Sooner or later you will run into a bird of this Nature. On a Rare Occasion A non Inbred Animal will do this as well. I guess a good example would be The Justin Morgan Horse - I Single Sire from an Outcross Breeding of Inbred Stock on 1 side and Questionable Breeding on other; Had the ability throw a large percentage of Offspring Closely Resembling his Type. to of the breeding of S bred to all Kinds of Stock threw Offspring for many generations with his Body Type.

I don't need the hatchet this time, I got a home for all I need to cull. He won't buther any till it get cool and I can go and look them over before the buther day. My tool are a cool morning, 5 gal bucket to sit on and some time to look. Those dang orp males can fool you in a heart beat. Cull them and then you see them at the county fair and wonder how you screw up.
