I am looking for ideas for a more open chicken yard. I currently have a 12x6 run, but want to expand to a bigger space so my birds can have grass, shade, more places to dust bathe, etc.

What does your yard look like? What type of fencing? Do you cover the whole area or is there a height you've found that chickens will not fly over? Thanks for all your ideas!!

I enclosed about 1/3 acre with electrified poultry netting. You can see it along the road.
The shrub arrangement was also planted for the birds to have some cover.

The coop/run setup sits inside the fence. That is another shrub arrangement in the middle of this picture that was added to the pen for cover. I tried to pick large bushy shrubs. There is a large perennial grass, nine bark and viburnum that make up the largest mass of this arrangement.

This is the same arrangement in the summer. The viburnum produces clusters of blue berries that the birds like to eat. There is also a tall wood stool tucked into this arrangement that they like to perch all over.

This quince bush was on the property when we bought the place and offers excellent shelter from aerial predators.

It sports quite a show of flowers in the spring.

Amazing! Those look like some happy chickens. Has the electric chicken fencing been good at keeping predators out? We have been battling a fox problem all summer. Hence why I ended up building a run instead of free ranging.

I've never had a ground predator loss and only one loss to a hawk. A juvenile, small pullet. I know of at least two unsuccessful hawk strikes. Statistically speaking, there must have been at least a dozen other hawk strikes. None remotely successful.
