Funny you should mention Black Sex Links as I was going to post them as my favorites (although they are hybrids and not actually a breed). BSLs are my personal favorites because they are friendly and hardy egg laying machines. I raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 large, brown eggs per hen per year. My Red Sex Links and White Leghorns have also had similar lay rates, but my BSLs have actually outlayed them slightly in really cold winter weather and have tended to lay the largest eggs of the three with double yolks not being uncommon.

Sorry, I forgot to post a pic of some of my Black Sex Links, but here is a couple of them.

Thank you for your help! everyone has been giving me a ~300 eggs a year. With this info I will get some BLS's

can you go down the list of everything you need for a happy flock it has been awhile since I last owned chickens and need a refreshment

Here is a list of some things that make for happy chickens:

Fresh, nutritious food given at least twice daily along with some form of calcium such as oyster shell
Enough nest boxes for all the hens, and these nest boxes being kept clean with soft bedding in them
Dust boxes or pits to allow chickens to clean off and get rid of parasites
Roosts set up high so the birds feel safe and comfortable at night
A secure coop or run to lock them in at night so they are safe from predators
A yard that allows them access to the sun, fresh air, grass, and bugs
Being raised around others of their own kind and getting treats from their owners
A heat light in the winter and a fan during the summer
Fresh water at all times

I hope this helps.

Of course it depends on the age of the chickens. For chicks you need Marek's vaccinations, a brooder, bedding, heat lamp, food dish, waterer, a vitamin and electrolyte blend for the water, and chick starter feed. For adult chickens you need a predator proof coop with nest boxes and a roosting ladder, a predator proof run (unless you choose to free range them), a feeder, waterer, laying feed, crushed oyster shells available for extra calcium when needed, grit, bedding, bathing dust or ashes, plenty of light, and a heater for the waterer if you live in areas where the water freezes in the winter. Some other additions that will really make your flock happy are chicken toys and other things in the coop/run to keep them from getting bored, and the occasional treats (although treats should never make up more than 10% of their diet).

My family couldn't decide which breeds to get, so my family picked 5 (the most our coop can handle without overcrowding)... We got a Black Australorp for my son, a Buff Orpington for my daughter, a Barred Plymouth Rock for my hubby; and I got a Delaware and a Golden Laced Wyandotte. They are still just the littlest babies, hatched yesterday and arrived here this afternoon, but they are so cute... From what I have read, all should be good with the kiddos too, when they get big, though our Barred Rock seems a bit of a bully with the other birds (but the Wyandotte is keeping her in her place to some extent)... Anyway, I already posted pics on my Intro thread, if you want to see them! https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1005430/brand-new-chicken-mama

Cheers!

Welcome to BYC!

I just bought three Black Australorp eggs (they are suppose to be one of the greatest breeds out there, and I'm hoping its true). I also have a Buff Orpington (Wynona), two Barred Rocks (Dominator and Liberty, but amazing chickens. Domni is my head rooster and is very respectful of me). Dexter (Dexie for short) is my Delaware and is really bold, loves to sleep on my shoulder or lap, and also peck at my eyes! I have a Silver Laced Wyandotte named Chiefess, a sweet, calm girl who likes to perch on my lap and was friendly from day one.

Best of luck with your new babies!

I went over and looked at your chicks earlier on your post. As I commented there, I loved the creative reasoning that you used to name one of the chicks, Lynda Carter, after the Wonder Woman actress. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) would love that as well as she's a big Wonder Woman fan. She's never named one of our hens Lynda Carter, but she has named one of them Diana (Wonder Woman's real name).)
