I've been feeding my flock a 50/50 mix of cracked corn and layer food, with some oats thrown in. In reading auctions for eggs for sale, I've seen many that mentioned they're birds only recieved 16/17% layer mash. That got me wondering. So I'm hoping you all will chime in with what your main food mix is for your flock! Thanks!

    Questions, lots of questions -

I really don't want to go out and buy grower feed. I'm feeding the 1 weekers game feed (since no one has nonmedicated starter around here) and the 8 weekers scratch (that's what the guy told me to feed them [IMG] just scratch). So I've been mixing half game feed and half scratch for them. Should that get us by until they start laying or do is there something they really need from the grower they won't get in my mix. Also, could my mixture work for layers, if I added a source of calcium to it, like oyster shell or something?

    * My hen is a pet and so definitely treated differently than a 'working' bird. She gets 2-1/2 oz. ( this is by coffee scoop not actual weight )of Layena plus 1 oz of scratch with scotch oats and hempseed added, twice a day summer, 3 times a day winter. I sub cracked corn for the oats in winter.

Quote:am I understanding you correctly ? Your 8 week old chicks you give them chicken scratch ? I thought the lil ones had to have the chick food until tehy were much older ? AS U CAN TELL I am new at this . I have 29 chicks ranging from 6 to 9 weeks old and 6 laying hens . I been mixing my chicken scratch and laying pellets to the older hens only . PLEASE ADVISE ME

ALSO , how often do you feed your chicks and hens a day ? I been feeding early morning and late afternoon , if this enough or to much ?

I have been leaving the feed out for them all the time... I read they don't recommend that, but mine look like they self regulate pretty good at this point. One mason jar full has been lasting a 2-3 days.
