I came home from nursing school to find this in the nest box. The egg on the right is the decoy store bought egg with its contents removed. I'm guessing this egg (left) is from Ruby (my only brown egg layer -Red Star) who is 21 weeks old today.
The biggest question I have right now.... Is this really her first egg? For the past few days she had been flying over the fence and waiting on my husband at the front door as he goes to work (noon time). I've looked all over the front and back yards and even looked in the woods. I cannot find any other egg anywhere. I told my son not to let the chickens out of the run today. So I made it home just before 1:00 pm and found the egg. Part of it was still drying so it happened in the time between him leaving for work and me coming home. Is this egg big for a first egg? I thought it would be smaller.
I can't tell you if it really is the first, I w o uld think if you looked all around and didn't find one then it's quite possible it's the first. Looks the right size for a first egg to me. Congrats.

The first eggs aren't always tiny. My sex link hens first egg was medium and the next a large.

BTW; Did you fill the decoy egg with something?

I have several birds that have laid their first eggs that were over a xxxl in size and are still laying that big, can't close the lid on an xxl carton. Some have even been dbl yoke size w/o the extra yoke.

It finally happened! I've been lurking on this thread for the past week, looking at everyone's photos and wondering if any of my 4 pullets would ever lay. They are Euskal Oiloa (Basque hens), about 22 weeks old. Two of them looked so ready - red combs, less upright posture, hanging out in the nests which they'd never paid any attention to before... But no eggs yet.

And then on Tuesday I noticed one had spent a lot of time in the nest box and the web cam (yes, we have a coop cam!) showed something different in the nest when she left - I thought maybe a large feather. I went out to check and there it was! A beautiful, perfect, little pinkish-tan egg! It really does happen eventually. I was so excited!

Once everyone was home we scrambled it and split it 3 ways (click for larger):

It was delicious!

Since Tuesday there has been a small egg every day, I think all from the same chicken, Goldie. They're about 36 grams (a size large egg would be about 57 grams). I didn't know an egg could be so cute!

Wow. That's amazing!
The egg was 40 g so still considered small. I'm guessing it must have been the first or the first one I will ever find. I had it for breakfast and it was yummy!

We got our first egg yesterday. I had notice that "Nikki", who I thought was a Dominique which turned out to be a Silver Cuckoo Marans, started the submissive squat two days prior to that. It was very interesting working in the yard/ garden as she went through her process of laying. So, here it is, in all of its glory, our first egg! We hope you enjoy!

A real beaut! Normal size.

It was a Double yolker!
