This is a normal nesting duty hens do while laying. Mine do it all the time. Although, it's so frustrating to change nesting material in the morning, then watch them kick all the bedding out, climb in, then pick up bedding piece by piece to build their nest.

But if you girl is doing this now, you should expect eggs any day!!!

BTW, the only "Normal" thing about raising chickens... there's nothing normal about it!
Thanks! All that primping in the nest, and she just layed her first egg on the threshold to the coop, Basically, right on the door frame, so it got cracked. It was a tiny little thing, pale brown and speckled. I forgot to get a picture of it. It was a very small, but fully formed with a hard shell and a yolk.

That reminds me, I've been advised to discard eggs with cracks in the shell. I've had two this week and I've composted them. Is that what everyone else does? The cracked one's have not been leaking or anything, but the outer shell has been cracked.

It's what I do. Once the shell is cracked bacteria can get in the egg. The bloom and the shell protect the inside, but once cracked it's like being in a bubble with a hole.

I've only had one egg that froze and cracked. I am keeping it in the freezer until I am ready to use it. No bacteria grows on frozen eggs. Even eggs that froze and didn't crack I just use up first.

That's a pretty blue and look at that colour variety in the other eggs!!
I have many breeds of chickens and they lay all sorts of colors, I have whites eggs now that are not in the picture and about 15 Ameracaunas and EEs that are not laying yet, I will be posting new pics as they are added to the mix.

Congratulations, she laid her first egg. Bet you the next will be in the nest. Next egg, she will understand what 's gonna happen.

If you find a cracked egg as soon as it is laid, go ahead and cook it to give back to the chickens. If it is cracked and not discovered for awhile, toss it in the compost.

Great idea. I will do that.

@FL Crowing Hen

I just crack those into a pyrex measure cup and microwave….they love eggs, scrambled, boiled or steamed. And eggs are great protein.
