Pretty eggs!  Hey, is that spiral do-hicky made for eggs, or something else, like potatoes?  I'd love one!  Where could I find it?

Yes, it's for eggs. We leave it on the counter and can keep track to eat the oldest eggs first.

My Barnevelder just laid her first egg. One day before turning 26 weeks. 9 days after the first squat. Funny, my easter egger also laid the first egg 9 days after first squat.

My first Japanese Bantam egg! (Okay, I'm cheating a bit, it is for me the first Japanese Bantam egg, the hen must have laid before, she's a year old and I bought her a few weeks ago, she just was in winter laying break). And best thing: it turned out to be fertilized - though it ended up in a batch of soup dumplings after checking. I hope my little hen will keep laying and go broody in another few weeks when the weather turns warmer.

Got my first eggs today! Technically yesterday I think one was laid though... Got stuck at work for a double and didn't bother to check for eggs when I got home since nobody has been laying. Not sure who laid them between two silkie/ee mixes, a frizzle Cochin bantam, and a silkie/cochin mix. Any guesses? Glad someone finally layed! They're all about 31 weeks. Was beginning to think I'd never get one!

Congratulations!! There is a way to tell who is laying. Pick up each chicken and check the width of their back pelvic bones. I know. Sounds funny. Once you feel what I'm talking about it makes sense. Look at YouTube. Someone posted a video, the bones are in the back by the vent. One to the left and one to the right. They are very close together if they are not laying and at least two finger widths apart if they are laying. You just put your fingers in between the bones externally. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks! After posting this, I looked up how to check and figured it out. Turns out it was the one that I was questioning whether or not it was a rooster! Lol. I'm 99% sure it's even her that's been crowing!

Thanks for the tip!

Now, can you tell us how to know which hen is laying which eggs? With my April batch it was easy because they started laying while I was spending much of the day building their new coop. Not the case with my August birds...
