Potty Training Chickens, How-to!

I am getting chicks in a week and I would like to train my chickes to stay within a certain area of the yard. Any advice?

After they are trained do they go to the designated area on their on ?Or do you have to prompt them to go each time?

I am intrested in teaching a chicken to open a varmit proof nesting box So they can safely free range nest.
Perhaps by pecking a code in or a colored spot. On several ocasions i have noticed roosters showing the hens where to nest.
Is this a common observance among chicken watchers?

I am having good luck with a digital card that the chickens can swipe through a card reader so they may gain entrance to a varmint proof nesting area. The only problem is that my chickens keep forgetting their PIN numbers and loosing their wallets.

Have you tried the latest security tech? I've installed a digital pad on which the chickens can scan their foot. When their identity is recognised they are granted access to the mess hall.

My old cockerel was realy good at showing the hens were to lay, if I had a new POL hen that was going to lay for the first time she's in a bit of a panic as to were and he would incourage her to go in the hut.

I found that if I put my younger guys with him then they would learn this behavior too.

I love this. we have a wonderful house chicken (cricket) she is very intelligent and housetraining would only make our relationship better. do you have any ideas on controlling unwanted behaviors like attacking house plants? she got put in time out this morning for trying to uproot a plant I thought I had put out of reach. sometimes we use a squirt gun, we only have to point it in her direction and she instantly quits what she is doing. after a few minutes we call her over and give her a love for being good. I hate the squirt gun but haven't found anything that works so well and time out are only for extreme behavior. thank you for posting the potty training instructions, I have no doubt she will figure this out quickly.

There is a college In north georgia where they teach students how to teach chickens to peck color sequences for rewards. to use them in anamal behavior and intelligence studies The chickens catch on so fast that thay intimidate the students. It's like "Ok, i got that down what else can you show me?" There use to be a place on panama city beach at Mericale strip park where you could put a coin in a slot, and a chicken would come out on stage and peck ouf a song on a childs piano! a reward would fall into a cup she would eat it and exit stage left! A chicken has more cones for recognizing color in his eye than you do. If you think chickens are not intelligent. Perhaps you are observing the behavior of chickens that have gone insane because of over crouding. It happens to humans too!

I learned in avian biology that birds do not have the ability to store and control the passage of excrement. This is one of many biological adaptations to remain as light as possible, such as the combination of liquid and solid waste. They simply do not have any built in muscular control or nerves to accomplish this. They are designed to always be at their lightest, and whenever a small amount of waste builds up, it is involuntarily released.

Be sure to ask your professor how many, and what kinds of birds he/she owns and interacts with on a daily basis. Also, be sure to ask him/her how birds avoid coating their eggs with feces when they brood, if they they have absolutely no control what so ever over their bowel movements.
