Poultry Dust

Hi,

My chickens have lice. Not super bad, but DE isn't working. I got poultry dust, but it doesn't say if I have to throw the eggs away for a bit of not. Do any of you know?

I'm going to dust the birds, clean out the coop, dust and replace bedding, and spread dust and lime on the coop floor.

When is it safe to eat the eggs again?

I think its safe now to eat the eggs. The lice is external to the chicken.

I add apple cider vinegar to EVERYONE's water. Mites and lice do NOT like the way it makes the animals taste. They come off on their own.

I also have places for the chickens and the turkeys to take dust baths (mulch, dirt, wood ash, and DM food grade). That also helps.

I choose to open all the sleeping spaces during the daytime for ventilation and for sunshine.

I give newbies (adopted) chickens epsom salt baths. Mites and lice don't like that either! But you can't be squirming when you see them leave the chicken and go to the towel. Just squish them.

If you are using permethrin, I think there's no egg withdrawal. WEAR A FACE MASK!!! At least a N95 or better. They are available at the paint store. Then go inside and wash clothes and shower. DE, as you've seen, is pretty useless. It's also dangerous to inhale, so not an improvement. Permethrin spray concentrate is MUCH less expensive than the dust, and much easier to use, BTW. Mary
