I was looking at the feed tags of a mill near me to see about maybe buying a tote, (2,000 lbs) of lay mash. I clicked on the tag link and one of the ingredients of more than one of their varieties was poultry fat. I was just wondering if that was considered a normal thing to be feeding chickens or not.

Feeding chicken to chickens don't sound like a good idea, and everyone I've asked said to avoid it if possible, but it is sadly common. I think Layena dosen't have animal fats in their feed.

There have been a number of threads about feeding meat, including chicken, to chickens. Chickens are naturally omniverous. Feeding them a diet devoid of meat goes against their nature. People who "advise against it" are generally responding emotionally not factually. I see no problem with using a feed that contains poultry fat or other meat or meat byproducts.
Before someone mentions Mad Cow Disease, BSE does not transmit to birds & there is no Mad Chicken Disease.

Now THAT response would definitely kill this thread.

But seriously, chickens are omnivores just like us. I am not planning to feed poultry to poultry but that is a personal preference. Though if you read enough in the forums you'll realize that the chickens have no qualms about eating each other, AT ALL.

Also, read this blog post:

Nothing wrong with feeding animal protein; bugs, worms, flying insects are all considered "meat."

Exactly.

Onthespot, chickens eat meat, that's about it. You can feed them whatever you want to feed them. No poultry byproducts? Hope you find something. I'm actually impressed it says what the source of the by-product is. I'm pretty sure the Dumor I have doesn't specify.
