Poultry hoarder busted in NM, FURTHER UPDATE see #10

The news story was rather short. The reason I asked is because county/city laws can be broke.....and then they take your animals. No inhumane treatment needed. I can understand some of the smaller animals but 18 goats and 3 horses seems like they would need more room than 2.8 acres with all those feathered guys/gals....but then again what do I know?

Man...can you imagine the food bill....

I have 4 goats, 5 dogs, 50+ chickens, 8 rabbits, and quail on the way. I use 1.5 acres for animals. Dogs have free rein over the yard, goats have an 3/4 acre fenced (but they go out during the day to my fenced yard). And my yard looks nice...everything painted and clean, no unhealthy animals (only lost one 2 week old chick....ever), 8 different chicken runs (spaced away from each other a bit), but I have 5 kids that range from elementary school to high school to help. Ask the oldest...he has to shovel all the "feces" 2x a week for the compost bin. Now that's a dirty job!

But I work in town....and oh my...do they think I have way too many when they hear about the critters. lol But everyone has a job. Dogs keep down the predators and keep strangers off the property (or at least pretend to...all bark no bite lol), goats keep down the weeds and give milk (I do feed them also...they do not live of forging alone), rabbits give meat and hides, and chickens give eggs (and very soon meat....I am wanting to try a run of Cornish X) and they do small pest control.

My best friend is a vet tech and she helps me with all my shots and things like that. My dogs are all fixed, they have shots and deworming on schedule. So do the goats (lol but not fixed...well the wether is). Chickens get minor things if they need it...but never have had an issue with parasites on anyone here.

At kidding time I have more goats...and when rabbits breed I have more of those....and then the chicken...lol...well you know. I just sell my excess (after I take what we need for meat). I keep there numbers down....but they are a big part of our survival and I am just as dependent on them as they are on me.

But I regress....yes that seems like way to many! But then again...those who live in glass houses should not throw rocks...so I am putting down the rock.

Numerically speaking, that's about 70 well cared for small animals on 1.5 acres. With the quail, it would be an average of 50 animals per acre. That seems like a lot, but the animals are happy and well cared for which did not seem to be the case on the raided property, where 464 poorly cared for animals were taken from a 2.8 acre property, and some of those animals were pretty big. Even if the entire space were used for animals (which it wasn't), it would have been something like 167 animals per acre. I can't find the original news video but it was pretty grim.
