Hi there. We are a family of 3 just starting out in the raising of chickens. We have our coop all planned out and are getting ready to start our build (will post before and after pics as the time comes). We live near Austin Tx and it can get Extremely hot during the summer months (upwards of 110 degrees and 90% humidity for months on end) and we want to make sure we bring in a hearty breed that can handle that type of weather. Does anyone have any recommendations? We are excited to start this new process and are looking forward to learning from y'all who have been doing this a while.

! I always find my pet chicken helpful when searching for weather specific breeds http://www.mypetchicken.com/catalog/Especially-Heat-Hardy-c69.aspx . I've also heard that adding electrolytes to their water helps with the heat (feed stores will sell packets). Hope this helps, and good luck with your future flock!

Many people start with a standard 4 sided building for a coop in the south, and have to rebuild it. Look over the pics and designs in this thread, which are much more well suited for our climate:

In the hot climes many use open sided coops - with hardware cloth sides on 2 or 3 sides instead of solid walls.Also use of water misters is popular and coop/run placement underneath trees or maunfactured shade.
