Is this effective against red mites? It's all I could find. I've been looking for food grade DE since I got chickens and haven't seen it. I also couldn't find sevin dust. Just ivermectin and poultry protector. Can poultry protector be used on 6 week old chicks?

I've bought DE from this company before:

Sevin dust should be available in the garden dept. of any walmart, true value hardware, TSC, etc.

I looked at a bottle of poultry protector and the active ingredient is potassium sorbate:

I would be hesitant about using the poultry protector on chicks under a few months old, but that's just me. I don't know enough about the potassium sorbate to make an informed decision.

Sevin dust is a insect dust for vegetables. Can be found in the gardening section. It is safe to use on chickens. I put the dust in the toe end of an old pair of panty hose and dust my chickens esp. on belly and around their vent and under their wings. Just be careful to not get it in their eyes or let them breath the dust.

I don't think my chickens would let me get that close to them to apply with a panty hose. And I dare not think what the Mrs. might say if she seen me in the backyard running around chasing chickens with one of her leggin stockings. She already thinks that I am too obsessed with the chickens. For her this might just validate that point.lol, But what other suggestions is there out there for getting some sevin dust on my chickens? Does it affect eggs or anything?

When I have to doctor my chickens in any way I wait until they've all gone to roost and treat them in the coop. That makes them easier to pick up and deal with and it's easier to check track of who got doctored and who didn't.

Gritsar...When you treat your chickens for mites w/Seven, is there a egg throw away period? I have a few birds that are missing feathers...I mean big, bald patches on their backs. I thought that others were pecking their feathers, but have not seen them do this. I have seen them pecking at their own feathers. I have not seen any bugs, just cleaned the coop and disinfected with bleach, so I don't know why these girls have not grown back their feathers:/ My only other thought was possiblity I'm somehow missing the mites...

The easiest way I've found to check for mites is to take a small flashlight and go into the coop at night, after all the chickens have gone to roost. Pick a chicken, any chicken and flip them bottom side up so you can see around the vent area. Mites will look like tiny red or black flakes of pepper that move. Put the chicken back on the roost and apologize for being so rude.
"Big, bald patches on their backs"? Do you have a rooster?
I really don't know if you can eat the eggs while treating with sevin dust or not. I've never used it on the chickens, only on dogs. A quick search using the keyword "sevin" should turn up an answer for you. If you have to treat for mites, be sure and get the sevin dust, DE, or whatever you use in each and every crevice of the coop, plus give the roosts a good dusting and change out your nestbox material and give them a dusting too.
ETA: According to this thread, the eggs are safe to eat during treatment. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=326978

The Dom has grown most of her feathers back, but the BA have acutally gotten worse since these pictures were taken about 3 weeks ago.
